Great introduction in OpenLayers ! This is really a fantastic library.
In order to make complete web mapping applications, I can recommend to have a look at GeoExt (http://www.geoext.org), the combination of OpenLayers and ExtJS and also to MapFish (http://trac.mapfish.org/trac/mapfish/wiki/Home) which provides the server infrastructure to host your data.
