I've been running on my site on Wordpress for years and here are some of what I consider essential plugins:
Wordpress Supercache (note the supercache has not been working with latest version of Wordpress)
Wordpress WP-DB-Backup (easily backup your database with one click)
WP-Contact Form (Not sure why this isn't built it)
Simple Tags (great tagging plugin)
Wordpress Automatic Upgrade (if you don't have 2.7 yet)
