Meet Monica Kumar, Oracle's senior Linux and open source marketing director (video)

Oracle may be making a little less noise recently about Unbreakable Linux, but it's going strong -- and Monica Kumar is in charge of marketing for it. She's a consistent (and engaging) IT trade show speaker, but since only a tiny percentage of the world's population (or even of Linux.com readers) will ever have a chance to meet her in person, the next best thing is to "meet her" in this video interview.

Thanks for posting the video.
After watching I've learned that I have no interest in this person or what she has to say. A taking head with catch phrases in her title.
Linux? Open Source? Terms to generate sales, to her they have no further meaning.

Maybe I am being to harsh but that's me.

She knows nothing about Linux if she believes the usual nonsense about Linux. The only problem with Linux for a marketing person is the lack of ACT! contact management on it. Let Oracle buy ACT! and port it! Then she wouldn't have any problems with Linux. After all, what is ACT! except a specialized database?

I have gone to a few Oracle seminars aimed at the City University of New York and the presenters where very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Linux. This was about 5 years ago when Oracle started their Unbreakable Linux campaign. The final ending of Meet Monica Kumar video was a complete shock to me. To see someone so dense about Linux in a Linux title is only a nightmare coming from the hills of Redmond, Washington. The scary part of the interview was when she called Windows stable and started to point out that they have the only office suite in the world. The painful part was that it sounded sincere as if she been brainwashed. So what does this say about Oracle employees? In my opinion, Oracle has not changed in any dramatic way and they will never changed. If they are going to be an open source company then they have a lot to teach there Linux Marketing Director. What a shame she is to herself and the company for having that Title. It seems that she was demoted and forced to take the position as her knowledge of Linux is nonexistent. Maybe it's a punishment put upon her so that she gets the hint to quit! When will she get the hint? Quit being the Linux and open source Marketing Director you SUCK!!!

It confirms what I've always believed - Oracle are embracing Open Source for the same reasons SUN are - because they have no choice - this does not mean they like it or want to use it - they have to - like swallowing dead rats when your starving. Thus we see a Marketing exec basically telling us that Linux sucks, and windows is a rock solid proven desktop - while sitting in a Linux conference of all places - why because she and Oracle have no choice but to try to ride out the wave.

With respect to MYSQL and PostgreSQL - I think oracle has much to fear from these technologies - Im sure over the next 5 or so years we will see the same cannibalisation of the proprietary Database market by these open alternatives that we've seen with the Closed Unix OS market by Linux.

I appreciate your honest and blunt feedback. I did not do a very good job of framing my response on the desktop question. Linux is clearly a very strong server platform. I belive that on the desktop front, Linux needs to follow the same maturity curve as the server...and its not a question of IF it will..but just a question of WHEN it will. Just like you, I would very much like to see a few viable desktop alternatives...competition is healthy for the market. I will gladly embrace the Linux desktop when it is ready for mass consumption, including the availability of third party applications eco system.

I am sure that with passion and commitment from Linux enthusiasts like yourself that day is not too far.

Regards,
Monica

Monica,

As you wrote above, maybe you didn't do a very good job of framing your response on the desktop question, but that doesn't mean people need to be rude. People should be able to "frame" your response for themselves. Personally, I would only have expected you to have a (full-time) Linux desktop if that's what Oracle supported for their marketing department. I do think that spending a little time on a Linux desktop would help you better understand a few of your customers. Probably only be a small percentage of them, but they may be a very vocal percentage.

Monica -

that was a brilliantly put response. lots of buzzwords and cliches, plenty of vagueness. And as for these dimwits who talk about marketing people having to know about the product... Since when, dude? The job is to sell. What's the difference between a burger and ...?
