The problem is that Microsoft's development tools spoil software developers so they don't have to do a lot of coding.So when they spend all their time in college making a .NET application. They get backed up in the real world when they have to think back to that one-semester of unix training they were required to take. I imagine Google has to do some training when they induct new developers.

It's not like that at all, Apple's OS is OS X to it would be silly for them to release iTunes for another OS first. This isn't the case for Google, it's not like they develop exclusively for Linux. And you can download and compile the source, so stop whining.

Well, actually, the source from Google for Chrome (Chromium) is only a command line testing phase for the Linux, so even if you compile the source, there is no GUI or any functionality. From the Chromium website, "Note: There is no working Chromium-based browser on Linux. Although many Chromium submodules build under Linux and a few unit tests pass, all that runs is a command-line "all tests pass" executable."

I was going to install gOS linux (google's Linux) on a spare box I had. I like the webII features. Maybe I won't do it now? I thought they were pushing Gnu/Linux! Instead they are playing into M'Softs hands.

Don't worry friends - Chrome's gonna hit the Linux Desktops soon. Don't forget it's open-source, so it's a matter of the community picking up the code and going after a Linux binary!

Yes, i just tried Google Chrome on vista. it's awesome.
When I moved on my linux machine. and i tried to download Chrome for it. there is no link availble.
I am very disappointed and i'm anxiously waiting for linux version.

gOS is most definately not google's OS!!!

1. gOS SUCKS! Trust me, my umpc came with gOS v2 Rocket and with in less than a week I ripped it out and installed Kubuntu. The newer versions of gOS are even worse and more restrictive.

2. Google doesn't own gOS. the "g" stands for "Good" e.g. goodOS. They just use Google apps to keep storage requirements to a minimum.

You want a lite weight OS try one with Xfce, Enlightenment, Fluxbox, etc...desktop enviroment you'll be lots happier.

Time will tell if they're playing into MS' hands or not. What they are doing is targeting MS because MS is THE application platform for ... oh about 90% of all the market. They had to concentrate on MS, if they want to be the platform to compete. You may end up being right, MS once was concerned with Lotus Notes, and once was concerned with Netscape navigator. We know what happened to those possible competitors. Google has certain advantages over them that MS may not be able to easily fight off.
As I said time will tell. Myself, I applaud google for their effort. I may wish that they had developed for all platforms simultaneously, but I understand why they concentrated on Windows, as everyone here should.

Their ENTIRE infrastructure is running Linux, they are where they are in large part due to Linux, but they write for the biggest audience first. Greed my friends. Google is getting scary. Why did they make an OS dependent browser anyway?

I can understand... It's better to have a few of us (Linux users) drool for a bit extra rather than irritate the much larger windows crowd.

If you actually watched their press release, you would see that they insist more than once that they are -very- dedicated to producing the linux and osx versions, that the project started cross-platform, but that Windows was ready first and that they are anxious to receive user feedback.

ALL browsers are OS dependent. You think firefox is exactly the same on each OS? Unless you build something in a virtual environment like JAVA, applications are developed independently for each platform.

Furthermore, there are NO Google tie-ins in the browser. If you import your other browser settings, it will replace google with any other default search engine you use, as well as other preferences. So I don't know where the "Google is getting scary" is getting at.

This is an open-source project, everyone can access the code, so I don't see this evil association between Google and Microsoft. I'd like Open source and M$ would be more related, and this is a good way, showing off how a business can be successful and productive based on open source apps.

It will come eventually. I prefer Firefox though. But, it will come. i say give it a few months. Remember they just released this and they don't know even if they will keep it(but probably will).

@anonymous(2 above): Gtalk runs on jabber - and there are a ton of jabber clients for linux.... I don't think a Gtalk client is needed.

I think that if a release was made for linux / mac straight off - it would be all too easy to dismiss this as another geek-pet-project, and not something for general release. I think that the windows only release might be a marketing move than anything else - and the desire to be populist.

Chrome is fast and has some nice features but it is nothing compared to Firefox. There are only a handful of options that can be set as where Firefox has thousands of plug-ins. If you want a basic browser it is good but it is no Firefox. I just hope Google doesn't push them out.

Of course they produced the Windows version first. It's a big project, with a lot of new design ideas. You have that much work to do, you're not going to spread yourself across so many platforms, you focus on one.

So, why Windows, and not us? Well, what's a beta? It's a way to get user feedback. Linux currently accounts for near or under 5% of desktop PCs. To get a final product out the door, releasing on Windows first makes sense. It also means that a greater number of users get a working product sooner.

Look at it this way. We don't have to put up with Internet Explorer. We can hold out for a while. I'm typing this in Chrome, from Windows (Uni assignment...this is work!) and it's good for a beta. We'll get ours, and Google has promised a browser made for us, not simply a remake of the Windows version. Patience, my friends. Soon, our time will come.

I haven't taken the time to read all of the individual responses, but the general consensus is pretty much;

Google (probably) released Chrome for Windows first, because they want __feedback__. Typically, Linux users are used with software that is of low quality, so they just live with the issues (not that all of it is bad, just look at Amarok). Windows users will just bitch to no end, so they can take that - and make a better browser.

Which is their goal, in case you haven't noticed. Google donates an inordinate amount of time and resources providing excellent, robust tools TO EVERYONE. The company, however, isn't supernatural. It doesn't have unlimited resources. It can't produce amazing, native code for every platform that demands it - they have to serve the masses (so they can, you know, survive???).

Lots of people here are surprised that Google is actually acting like a company. Granted, they're very good at doing what they do (that is, being awesome), but Google is doing the very best it can. Why don't you people go get all pissy at Yahoo? After all, they don't contribute to open source, have a terrible search engine, their web services are horrible, expensive, and full of spam - but we've turned a blind eye to that one, haven't we?

I do NOT wan't people to believe that the Linux community is too immature to wait for better code to be written and distributed. Think about it. Even the title of this page makes it look like we deserve some kind of special treatment, or that Google is evil because they understand the concept of 'marketing'.

Just because Windows isn't open source, doesn't mean that it's incompatible with FOSS. Read ANY foss-like license. The code is FOR EVERYONE.

Man... this is my third rewrite. I don't know where to start.

If Linux was going to do it, it would be done already. Linux isn't going to do it. Ubuntu is your best shot, and it still falls way short. Open Office is your best shot, and it falls way short.

But Chrome and Google Docs - they might do it. They just might have a shot at causing a *significant* erosion of Microsoft dominance. Not just a significant erosion, but possibly causing a critical inflection point that disrupts Microsoft's dominance.

And if and when that happens, if Chrome is the method that causes this disruption... then WHY would you pay $200 for an OS that exists solely to provide a foundation for your browser and browser apps to run on? You probably wouldn't, especially if there were an open-sourced foundation platform that you could get for free that would do the same thing.

But to start off, you don't want to win those over who are already converted. You don't want to preach to the choir. Y'all propeller-heads with your Tux t-shirts and bad hygine are already part of the congregation - members of the church. You're already happily drinking the Kool-Aide. What good is there in selling YOU folks on the concept?

No... the hard sell is the people who you folks have already turned OFF from Linux. The people who have thought about or tried Linux and found it still wanting. Those who go with Win32 because Win32 is what you go with, because everything else is a headache. I know YOU don't think this, but that isn't important. The other 80% of installed desktop users feel this way. And THAT is the demographic that Google is after.

Which is damn smart business. Once Google wins that war, then, and ONLY then, does Linux become a possible contender to unseat Win32 (and OS X or any other OS with a pricetag on it, for that matter).

Face it, OS X has been more successful than Linux, in half the time. Google represents a powerful corporation with deep pockets that can make the advertising play to make Chrome successful - and in the END, in the BIG picture, that potentially achieves for Linux what you dweebs have been whining to have happen for the last decade.

Chrome is potentially the proverbial Linux killer-ap. Oddly enough, it achieves this by making Linux inconsequential.

Google sees a future world where you buy your PC, you install your OS (which becomes less than a commodity, it becomes something that business will WANT to give away for free, like a Browser is, today), and once you get on, all your content is provided "free" in exchange for advertising. Much like the model of television.

And you guys turn on them the minute you don't get it. A huge reason that Linux hasn't been successful is because of *nix idealism and the *nix community's inability to understand sound and rational business decision. (They're really linked, a circle, or a geeky Yin and Yang).

Get over yourself, this may mark the moment where the worm turns for Linux. This may be the most significant change in technology since the Internet first became widely commercially available.

I'm not anti-Linux, and I'm not pro Win32. But for broad business applications, Linux has never been a contender or threat, in my book. Until the release of Chrome, I saw little reason to revise that opinion. Chrome is a potential game-changer. And the guys at Google know a bit or two about successfully marketing a product. They've achieved far more in getting wide market mind-share in the same time than any *nix distro has accomplished. Maybe you guys should trust them before you hang them out to dry and start calling them the next Evil Empire.

You can tell them politely that they do not need chrome now and that it may soon be available on Linux anyway, Google has done some things that we may never be able to fathom but you can remind them,again politely, that Google Summer Of Code is a serious contributor to open source and Linux in general and so is still a friendly giant.

There is always an eagerness to try new things whether you are a Linux geek or a user of any caliber on any OS so you have to understand the disappointment of Mac OSX and Linux users. These business argument about larger user base on Windows and the need to get to them first does not hold up in all cases, it is just nonsense being parroted.

That said, I am not one of those that is going to chastise Google for this biased release, for the simple reason that I feel I do not need it, I believe the technology behind chrome will be showing up in some other browsers eventually anyway, Epiphany for one.

You are missing the point, the Linux movement is not about desktop domination. what it means to do is provide an OS for people to get away from the problems associated with the other operating systems while at the same time offering similar or better experiences that the innovations in Linux provides, no operating system is perfect and so I may have a better experience as far as malware and menu system organization are concerned on Linux, on Windows it may be better drivers or availability of special programs but the whole process is dynamic and Linux is changing and improving at a rapid rate , I wold say Linux has already “done it” done it, here means giving people who want it, a satisfying alternative. time and time again people misunderstand what Linux in particular and open source in general is about.

What does Open office falls short of? Again the objective of the Open Office project is to give users on all major desktop platforms a free open high quality choice in office productivity, and if you ask me it has made a serious dent in Microsoft's business so it has not fallen short, unless you know of some other unmet objective that this project had stated that no one else knows about, the project wants to give people the opportunity to use a good product free of cost or license restrictions, so you do not have to buy or for that matter steal the commercial product. The aim is never to kill Microsoft's product but it may just do that, just stick around.

While cloud computing is useful and has a big place in the future nobody trust cloud computing that much, there are inherent performance and security issues associated with this. It is a useful technology but it will never be able to accomplish much more than Open Office + Zimbra or Zoho, for example. You must always keep an eye out for inherent limitations in any technology.

Linux and Mac along with Open Office, Zimbra, Scalix and some other Open source applications has already dented Microsoft's business there is already cloud computing on all platforms Chrome+Google Docs will not make much of a difference in terms of people resorting to this kind of computing despite the speed improvements. Try to get more familiar with the products you are criticizing, it is not a good idea to make false statements and then build your argument around them.



This foolishness about Chrome+Google Docs would be a good argument if all one needs to do on a computer could be done that way and people had the confidence in such a method, you can see how this can provide a solution in many cases to a company especially one that needs collaboration on office documents but that is already being done without Chrome+Google Docs.


What you are suggesting here is nothing new Netbook optimized desktop systems are doing this right now, they however are not intended to replace the traditional way of doing things they are there to complement, the problem for anyone trying to attack Microsoft this way is that it will not be enough to make any OS inconsequential.

I have this feeling that chrome will only be seen the way most see Opera, a good new browser with some special features but unwilling to switch to it because they have this Firefox extension that they can not live without even IE die hards are around still for whatever reason,

I can not see Google chrome catching up with Mozilla any time soon and by the time they reach anywhere near the feature set of Firefox that browser will have made the the transition to an engine that may very well outperform chrome.

Chrome will just be another browser to choose from and yes they may have a good following and if they continue could take a serious enough part of the market share, this I think is what Google is after the fact that the bulk of people using their services does so through a browser they want to have a hand in the browser business.

Oh, and BTW, many Linux geeks prefer poor hygiene to mental retardation something that always seem to be the case with many Mac/Windows jailbirds.

Linux is only as good as we make it. The foundation is there, but a single browser or "killer app" won't tip it into the mainstream.

If Linux users want to be recognized and get more support, we shouldn't wine and bitch.

I don't know what they are doing, but it sure seems Linux is the step-child in all of google's affairs. I haven't seen a native google app for Linux other than the new google apps; which Linux has already created their own widgets in the mean-time and are doing quite well comped to the windows (finally, after four years for linux) google desktop. Other than that...Wine is needed to run google stuff!

If you want to crush M$ and hit'em where it hurts...take MAC's approach. don't build apps to run on Winblows unless they install a GTK engine...LOL Simple!!!

Make M$ folks flock the way of openness. But that's ok...we are Linux users/geeks first and we can stand on our own and reverse engineer anything anyone throws to the open...if we want it bad enough...or just make our own!

Take away all the M$ boxes and google is history.

I for one don't give a damn if google does not release a linux version right now.
We already have lots of great browsers with us, while those using windows are stuck with firefox, ie and opera.
I am happy using Konqueror on Linux. And firefox.
They are each faster on linux than chrome on windows, on the same machine.

Linux has always been a thing designed for and by geeks, and I am proud of that. For all those people here who think we are either poor or stingy users who can't afford paid systems and can live with poor quality software, I offer a virtual b00t on their @$$es. Grow up. I use linux because of the huge performance boost it offers me over windows, coupled with total transparency and extreme ease of customization and hackable nature it has. And linux apps don't suck. I have still not seen an equivalent of Kaffeine and AmaroK for windows. For all practical purposes, OpenOffice.org serves me perfectly and it does not seem inferior to MS Office in any way. Linux launchers are way more easy to use and edit compared to windows "shortcuts". Terminal in linux offers a huge potential to maximize productivity on the system and saves time for many tasks, while on the other hand, terminal on windows is an insult to the word terminal and offers hardly anything to look forward to for windows users.

Chrome would come when its ready, and I am fine with that. As long as its opensource, its going to have lots of developers working on it to be ported as efficiently as possible to linux.

The only hope I have is that they would use QT4.4 for designing linux Chrome and compile it statically like opera.

If they had released the linux / macOS versions first the whole thing would have gone down in the eyes of the public as some geeky crap they don't feel related to.... when the windows version would have come out, the average joe wouldn't have bothered to even look into it, the average joe doesn't really like to get informed, and if it seems like chrome is an alien geeky app then in the eyes of the voting majority it probably is...

I doubt google pushed the windows release first in order to make more $$$$ than the thing deserves, I think it was rather fear of having a dramatical $$$$ and image loss.

Wow. Sure Chrome looks great, but it's not as if it's some insane thing that will push open source into the mainstream. Firefox, as it stands, is better than Chrome (though I think it seems Chrome has a bit more potential - but with open source things, it's hard to tell), and in case nobody noticed, Firefox -is open source-.

The way to introduce good things into culture isn't by throwing in a single really good thing into the mix, it's by throwing a -lot- of really good things into the mix. Google uses Linux, and they will eventually release Chrome for Linux, so we can all beta test it. Chrome isn't even in the "really good" stage yet, so I fail to see what the big issue is.

Releasing it to the masses (Windoze) before the people who could actually help the project (Linux) is actually a good move, but not just for the reasons other people stated. If you release a crappy program into the masses, you get people going "oh, well it's just in beta" (and then there's the fact that Windoze users -need- more security, think of giving a shield to a hobo vs a person who is made of steel), but if you release it to the portion of people that are more likely to help the project, then it ends up as a program nobody really want to work on, because it's not even finished yet, and then it just lays on the backburner forever.

Well, I'm sort of surprised no one has brought up any of the development aspects on this, so I will. [In case anyone cares, I'm a software developer with experience in C, C++, Java, JavaScript, HTML, Perl, Ruby/RoR, and VBScript (worst year of my life), with focus in Web, GUI, OpenGL, OpenAL, and client/server networking in most of those languages. GLSL is a language, technically, so I'll mention that as well.]

In a nutshell, Google's approach makes perfect sense. That the unit tests run from the command line means that the logic is in place - that is, the code that figures out how to read the HTML file works. The problem comes to GUI development. Designing a Graphical User Interface (a window) on Windows is completely different from designing one for *nix. We're talking about writing the same code twice, because it's so different. They could probably have used SDL to build the outer frame, at least, but they'd still have to use the native GDI libraries for all the labels, text fields, buttons, etc. - that or write/plug in their own, which is a can of worms in itself (trust me!). It just makes more sense to use what's already in place. Programming in this context - especially in C/C++ (Chrome's language) - is very much a practice of playing nice with the evil giant's tools, like it or not.

So why not program the *nix version first, or even concurrently? Might make sense to you and I, and it's certainly appealing. The fact that Google uses *nix so extensively themselves almost certainly means their developers would prefer to program for *nix, and they probably make liberal use of the virtual environments (MSYS, Cygwin, etc.) when they run under Windows. The answer to this question, then, has been posted repeatedly above, and has everything to do with economics. I would like to add to those illustrious points, however, that if Google had released Chrome to the *nix community first, then most people would not be able to use it, and would completely overlook it when the Windows version is finally released. When people get the idea that your product can't apply to them, they tend to shut you out long before you get a second chance to tell them, "Wait, it works now!" -- The *nix community will check back and see, because they know it is coming, and if it doesn't, then someone will probably port it anyways. But the average Windows users? Well, there's a reason they're still on Windows.

I think its a marketing strategy. The chrome is similar in many aspects to firefox & safari (functionality & render engine) and doesn't affects a lot to mac or linux users, but they have to surprise the windows users, who still many of them surf the web through internet explorer. Really, i dont expect more of chrome than everything firefox already give us

I've used Linux for 10 years+, haven't even had Windows until a few months ago I bought a laptop.
So, I'm interested in Chrome for Linux.

No, it means they have enough of a clue to realize the market for a Windows browser is like 125 times larger than for Linux, at this point. Please spare us all the drama. It's open source, we'll get one for Linux eventually... (ahem, as if I need another browser for linux? Like Opera, Konqueror and Firefox are not enough?)

Why it is on Windoze first?
Because windoze did make the business easier. Developing an application in windoze is easier than developing it in linux.
Also getting feedbacks. Linux users are very very very less than windoze users (hard for me to say that). The app is still in the beta phase and feedbacks are crucial.

At Google, there are many MAC users. Chrome developers are in great pressure to bring chrome for mac soon.

For people who criticize Google. Go to http://dev.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/linux-development
and contribute to this open source. Don't expect that everything will be done while you are just read news and drink your coffee.

Till now, Chrome have been tested on Ubuntu(a platform that google use) and Google request more tests on other platforms.

I approve what google is doing. I would have done exactly the same. I'm a Linux user, but Google has to deploy its own strategy: to kill MS Office. First the launch of plenty of web-apps like Gmail and GDocs (above all) and then the "glue" which is linking all those apps together: Chrome.
Google is getting big...too big .. probably enough to replace MS in few years, and then we will have a new MS called Google!

They released source code. Even if it does not allow to compile a working version for Linux, it is a good thing (better than releasing no code). Anxious? I understand. I am also looking forward to run Chrome on Linux. But to complain? I think its too much. If Google didn't develop a new browser and (therefore) didn't release code, nobody would be complaining... freak.

I don't want to start a flame, but would like to be clear: if you don't like the situation, go and develop your own browser. Don't have the skills? Then find an appropriate place to share your design/ideas with the community and if you are lucky you might find allies that can write code. Or do you want to stick with Google Chrome? No problem, then contact Google and ask how can you help for the Linux version to be released sooner.

Don't forget that we use Linux and not Windows because we are more intelligent, we like software that works the right way and don't get easily blinded by the fireworks. We are people who like to solve problems the right way. Just trolling about Google not releasing a Linux version first seems a little bit irrational. Why would Google want to increase its development efforts on a Linux version of Chrome if those already spent are answered with unnecessarily negative criticism?

firstly, I love google but everyone needs to stop acting like its commendable to release their source code. Their source code is nonfunctional. And this is is no way "hitting microsoft where it hurts" no one that uses chrome uses explorer, it's only competing with firefox. Anyone who has yet to switch from explorer to firefox certainly isn't jumping ship to chrome. And releasing for windows only isn't "brilliant" it's just silly, should have been built on a linux platform first and easily ported to mac/windows... and it should have released for mac and windows at same time. Poor job by google this time.

You need a super-light browser to run them all in the same moment ... and integration with mobiles is the next step... Do you really think they want just to compete with firefox??? They are even joint with Mozilla!! Mobile integration is the challenge of the next years.. who will get this challenge will win over the market. Google and Mac starts from the first row... Great job by Google ... you'll see!

It is clear that Google is NOT trying to compete with Firefox, although in time they will squeeze them out. Google is becoming the lesser of two evils, and while it is fun to think that Google is still the light in a sea of Microsoft darkness, times have changed. Google is a corporation, and the sole purpose of the corporation is to destroy the competition and fuel consumption.

As Linux users, we must realize that we are not the target producers. While we are more versed in computer manipulation, we are a dwarfed consumer group. Thus, Google is targeting the group they need to hit hardest. After they have taken a sizable chunk out of MS users, they can turn their sights to Macs and, ultimately, open-sourcers such as Mozilla.

Google is a brilliant group, and they know that such a plan will take a long, long time to implement. Thus, they extended their contract to Mozilla, keeping them under their umbrella until a time they are better able to attack. Google isn't hunting Mac or Linux users with this release; we can expect that in a number of years, although I'm sure they will accommodate our needs sooner than that.

The global market is a global battlefield. Bunker down in the Linux trench, because the war will be on our doorstep soon enough.
