Microsoft going the way of XML?

Anonymous Reader writes "Microsoft has just announced that their upcoming version of Microsoft Word will support a new default file format based on XML. Does this imply that the OpenOffice.org community (and other OpenSource Word Processing Suites) will have to repeat all the work they put in to reverse engineering the old format for the new one?"
