Linux on laptops? Oh, my! (video)

San Francisco -- Some of the heaviest PR lead-up to this year's West Coast LinuxWorld Conference and Expo was about Linux on laptops, and specifically Novell's SUSE Linux on Lenovo laptops.
It seems that you will soon be able to buy SUSE Linux pre-loaded on Lenovo ThinkPad laptops, and that toll-free Linux phone support, from Lenovo, will be included. Not only that, but this is enterprise Linux, not just Linux for home use.

Could this be the start of a trend? We all know by now that Michael Dell runs Ubuntu on his personal laptop, and that you can now buy a Dell laptop preloaded with Ubuntu (if you root around hard enough on Dell's Web site).

We found one LinuxWorld exhibitor who thinks both Dell and Lenovo are "late to the party." But then, Lincoln Durey's company, Emperor Linux, has been selling Linux laptops for eight years, so he has a right to say that -- and even to smile a little snidely when he does.

Dell will sell soon PC with Ubuntu on UK, France, Germany and China

They say that they need time to localize all into the native language and create a Dell support in the local language ... so they need time to extend this offer to the rest of the World

I bought a Lenove ThinkPad R60e two months ago, here in Hong Kong. At least at that time, and I guess until now, Windows is the only OS you can get on it.
Anyway, I removed Vista and installed Fedora 7, which runs great!

As long as people buys a PC and laptop WITH Windows they support Windows and not Linux. Even if they delete Windows and installs Linux they are giving money to MS Windows. I know that not many laptops comes without Windows and that we more or less are inclined to buy it, but we must start buying and demanding PC's and laptops with no-OS or at least Linux-mounted. I'm buying my new Zepto laptop soon.

I use a Compaq E500 with Linux Puppy and love it. Puppy is lots faster that windozz! I did have to get rid of the original OS prior to installing Linux on my Compaq. It would be great to be able to buy a computer with the Linux OS of choice and have support come with the new Linux PC. There would be lots of people switching to Linux if that happened!

This was good to see, but the problem is that, most of the desktop users havent reached the comfort level with it. The vendors need to system vendors need to start supporting Linux or at least give basic software support. The second problem is that at the level normal windows users work , it will be out of their minds to understand Linux untill and unless the system vendor takes the initiative to support the user. Linux would always be good for users who hate microsoft and have a good technical instinct to understand things.
