How about a Linux machine in the background?

Posted by: Scott Dowdle on March 21, 2008 10:37 PM
Steve Jobs wouldn't look right with a Linux desktop behind him when speaking.

How about Linux in the background? Or something other than Mac OS X?

I don't have anything against choice or using Mac OS X, just having it in the background for the Linux.com video.

Look closer. There's two computers behind me, a Mac and a PC.

What's in the background?

Posted by: Scott Dowdle on March 21, 2008 11:16 PM
Oh, I love the video content... so sorry for the little nag. It doesn't matter what hardware you have, just what OS is on the screen. It's kinda like a Coke commercial with a Pepsi billboard in the background. Can't really tell what the computer on the right is running since it is in screensaver mode. Can't make out what the bouncing words say either. Looks like someone agrees with me since the still picture that represents the video has the Mac screen cropped out. :)

Is that an iBook/PowerBook that is in front of you?

I'm guessing you use the Mac for video production, eh?

Keep up the good work.

No problem, Scott. It's a great question actually, and I'm glad to have the chance to clear it up (I doubt you're the first person to have noticed:-)

Here's the deal: I actually have a bunch of computers all over the place running different things. I've got the iMac, a Vista box (Ick. No, really...super-ick), an XP box, a couple other Macs scattered around, an Ubuntu box, an Eee PC I borrow that makes occasional appearances (I love it), and I'm about to start dabbling in OpenSUSE. <Insert Fedora plug here, my first love>

I have the different setups for a few reasons. Some of the things I do outside of work require me to have XP; professionally I write about lots of different tech and this give the the chance to review and compare apps; and (the biggest reason) I love me some computers. Some folks collect stamps, I collect tech. :-)

The screensaver says "Rockbox rocks!" -- and it totally does. The cropped pic was a quick .jpg I took to toss onto Blip as a thumbnail.

Thanks for watching and feel free to ask whatever's on your mind.

Oh, almost forgot. Yep, the laptop in front of me is a MacBook Pro. That was issued to me by SourceForge (yes, I know... ironic, but they have their reasons) and most of us use BootCamp, (or, in my case VMware Fusion) to shoehorn Linux onto it. I usually use it to edit the shows, and so far I've been using iMovie -- which, quite frankly sucks sweat socks. Roblimo, our resident video guru, and I have been debating what a better option would be. Kino probably won't do what I need, or at least not easily. Sony Vegas looks attractive but I'm told it's got a fairly steep learning curve (which is fine with me but I'm so busy right now that learning a new app well enough in a week's time to get these shows up isn't on my list of to-dos right now).

Hi Lisa!

I agree with the above comments- you should have your Mac running Linux if its going to take centre stage on a vid about Linux for Linux.com! I think OSX is cool and I'd probably switch to it if got fully open sourced but the future is Linux vs Haiku vs Solaris vs BSD as it stands. Vendor lock-in should be a 20th century nasty- it is for me :D

Prove how cool linux really is and do all the future vids entirely with Linux and FOSS!

The best FOSS video tools I know of are:

kino - DV capture

cinelerra - editing + compositing

winff - easy, batch video conversion tool

DeVeDe - easy DVD and VCD creation

dvd:rip - Hmmm?

xdtv - analogue (v4l2) and DVB capture (or use kaffeine for DVB)

gtk-recordmydesktop - guess!

gimp / krita - bitmap graphics

inkscape - vector graphics

synfig - vector animation

blender - 3D graphics and animation

There you go! A complete graphics and video environment comprised of entirely FOSS! Now you have no excuses! ;)
