RipCode builds video transcoding device on Linux base

When RipCode decided to build a video transcoding device three years ago, it used MontaVista Linux Professional Edition, a platform designed for developers who want all the benefits of an open source development environment.

Finnish developer uses Linux and OSS to move to market quickly

For Navicron, a wireless technology company launched in Oulu, Finland, in 2004, open source development means it can move products to market quicker and cheaper. Navicron is just beginning to reach out to the United States in search of a larger market. The company, which creates hardware and software for cell phones, recently opened an office in Texas so company representatives could be closer to potential vendor partners and venture capital in the States.

Palm cancels Foleo sub-notebook

Palm CEO Ed Colligan announced the cancellation of the company's Foleo mobile companion today in a post on the company's official blog. Colligan cites the need to focus effort on Palm's next-generation smartphone operating system as the reason behind the decision.

Maemo 3.2 update brings Skype, kernel improvements to Nokia tablets

With little fanfare, Nokia released the latest upgrade for its N800 Internet tablets this weekend. Known officially as Internet Tablet OS 2007 Edition version 4.2007.26-8 and to open source patrons as Maemo 3.2, the new download features long-awaited changes to the Linux kernel, improved battery life, and some flashy updates to the application software -- including the popular Skype softphone.

Wind River, Red Hat join forces for new embedded Linux product

Wind River Systems and Red Hat on Monday announced a partnership to create a new Linux-based distribution for the embedded application market. The new Red Hat Embedded Linux will be based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 code base. Neither company would confirm an expected release date.

Embedded Linux becoming 'disruptive force'

UPDATED PALO ALTO, Calif. -- These days, embedded Linux for consumers pretty much means TiVo, a Sharp Zaurus handheld, or the wireless LAN gateways you may having running at home. Although EL is not exactly taking IT by storm at the moment -- and because a whole lot of experimental EL products have come and quickly gone -- it is nonetheless establishing its own place in the world. And there are those who firmly believe that EL will play an increasingly important role in gadgets to come.
