Novell Grows Its Linux Business

So far, so good for Novell. For its first-quarter 2008 results, Novell reported growing income and revenues with a strong year-over-year showing from its Linux platform business. With Microsoft's Windows Server 2008 set to enter the market, Novell's CEO is optimistic that the company can continue to grow its business even further.

Novell cooks the books

From what I remember of Novell's 10K filings with the SEC, as part of their bedding down with Microsoft, their "exchange of payments" with Microsoft enabled Novell to "realize" a certain amount of revenue that year, and Novell held in reserve the majority amount, so that they could "realize" additional revenue in future quarters and future years in amounts they saw fit. iirc they had enough money and a specified time frame that was at least 5 years out. So for the next few years everyone should expect Novell to be posting rising revenue every quarter, every year, starting from the quarter that Novell bedded down with Microsoft. Rising revenue every quarter, beating the previous quarters, and beating the same quarters of previous years, just like Wall St. fully expects them to do.

Meanwhile, Red Hat continues to beat Novell's brains in on the revenue side, and Debian continues to beat Novell's brains in on the installed base and "market share" (currently being installed) side. Way to go Novell! Hey, maybe Netware will make a comeback! Yeah, that's the ticket!
