I am planning to install a 120 GB hd into my compaq pc and I want the ability to choose either XP or linux systems.
I need instructions on how to:
Do I set one as master the other as slave or cable select at the jumpers?

I'd just set one as master and the other as slave and be done with it.

Have you installed the systems? In what order did you install them, and onto which disks? More detailed information needed. Ideally, Grub would be installed in the master boot sector of the master disk, and should give you the option during installation of the Linux system.

Yes, if you can, and to make things simpler, try re-installing Linux. You can still install it on the 40Gb disk, but when asked, accept the offer to install the GRUB boot loader on the master disk. Do this in the master boot sector. Don't format your Windows partitions. That should work. What Linux distribution did you install?
