Subject : looking for linux to handle 8gb - 32gb ram
ok i asked linux directly and was rebuffed here cause it was easyer for them than to answer me. i have not used linux b4, i have tryed fadora and ubuntu and always switched back to xp. (im honest) i have however burnt and distrabuted both ubuntu and fadora free of charge to everyone and anyone i could. so now i need help and thought its time i asked and got some answers.. i am building a new computer main aspect of this new pc is that it is capable of handleing 32gb of ram on a single motherboard and ha built in duel gfx pcie for sli graphic (im not a geek honest that was in the manual) anyhow there is no point having 32gb of ram unless you have an Operating System that can use it or atleast read the ram. windows xp is old now ad cant handle more than 3gb unless u get 64bitxp witch allows 4gb but still only half the ram i want as a minamum. so need to desparitly know which OS if any can read from 8gb of ram upwards. linux is my best bet so far. ok and just for the people out there sayin WTF why the hell would you need more than 8gb or why 32gb of ram. well the answer is easy, 1, at the rate of ram increase and games usage aswell as the rate of program ram usage 8gb will be a standerd very soon. ( there is already 8gb sticks out there.) 2, i am so fed up with my computer being old b4 i even take it out of the box that i have graphed the rate of advancments and i am just jumping ahead 18-24 months 3, i use alot of graphic software and dvd editing (not burning) and the specs i have will save me over 40 hours of time per week. basicly i will do 2weeks work in one week. 4, cause it will be a kick ass mmihie ;) anyway let me know plz eather way i realy want to move away from microsoft.

WOW , sorry , I can't help you there but ... I even haven't a clue that you can have more then 4 gb ram ... not mention 32 gb ram :) . Well I think that every linux is good at it ( just guesing ) though they are beter to use on older PC .Bbut if you do some research you may find it out :) Btw ,why you don't use Windows Vista or something ? because if there are something so powerful then Microsoft is the first one that will try to handle it :P OK , I think I know the answer - you will have to pay much for it and it won't work better then Linux :P OK ,sorry for not answering your question ... P.S. how much you think spend on making such powerlfull PC ? I don't know how much RAM model you can to add PC but I think you will add atleast two so it sounds very expensive .

You can use any 64bit linux distro, I recommend that you try Fedora or Ubuntu, but make sure to select the 64bit versions of them.

In order to use all 32 GB of ram in Windows you'll need a 64 bit system. XP Pro 64-bit and Vista 64-bit both allow up to 32 GB of ram. With Linux I would still recommend a 64 bit system. try Sidux or Sabayon Linux both have 64-bit system and are easy to install and run. Both also have live CDs available for download.

Any 64-bit OS can support that amount of RAM

well ppl im back its been a long long while. in my time away making my pc i have distroyed 3 mobo's 2 towers and 4 gb of ram but its all been worth it X i hope X. ok heres some filling info, mac is worthless to me because i would have had to buy the mac pro starting at £1000 and double that for the 32gb of ram i wanted. talked with microsoft about my os requirments and they pointed out what snowman and Corleone stated that vista 64 will run it np. (they didnt wana talk about xp) so i "borrowed" a copy of vista64 and left it to the side for later. i also got hold of ubuntu, fedora and suse 64 bit versions and left them to the side. ok so vista64, amzing even after having 8gb of ram installed and duel ddr2 sli 1gb gfx cards installed 1tb hdd duel core 2.4ghz it still said my build was 4 stars. vista ran ok but was jumpy from time to time this problem was sorted out by removing main vent fan and replacing with 4 x 4x4cm fans my god i needed a fans for the fans lol. ubuntu did not load when i put more that 8gb of ram in not sure why but with the 8gb it was a dream michine some problems with the sli system so ran a single gfx wich to be honest is powerfull enough.start time was alot faster but with 8gb thats what i would expect. fedora just kept crashing out on me untill i was on 4gb of ram might have been something i did but not sure 4gb was its max on mine. n(mybe it needed some manual tweeking) sus now this is a dream as far as im concerned ran all 8gb i installed no issues no problems with anything except the sli, im not sure if this is a common thing with linux as i have not checked. im tempted to to realy put all 32 gb of ram in but as i stated above the first time i tryed it i had accidents. anyhoo i will be back asap with mini clips of the pc with all / max ram in and working screen wioth pc specs on so you can have a look and see what you think.

It's difficult for me to tell exactly what problems you are having, but 64-bit linux distros. will handle 32Mb+ of RAM routinely if installed properly. No problem, no question. Is your motherboard configured correctly to handle the memory?
