Hi, I have used linux for many years in the server environment. I was thinking about dual booting my pc with Fedora or the like. I have a QX6700 cpu w/ dual 8800 gtx cards in SLI. I guess my first question is - when will (if ever) mainstream gaming titles like COD 4 be available for play on linux? Secondly, when will an open source version of Directx 10 be developed for linux? It seems to me that linux will never be a viable, competitive, mainstream, desktop alternative to Microslop until it offers the same or better in both gaming and productivity software solutions. They already are I'm pretty sure; I don't have my linux pc up on the internet yet, (gonna post a help thread after this XD) so it's clear I know little to nothing about linux but im pretty sure you can download something called Wine (winehq.com i think) and you can play whatever you want on linux.

Yes, Wine is an (incredibly) increasingly good route for running Windows programs under Linux, including games. The problem with porting "mainstream" games, however, doesn't lie with Linux, but with the developers. If you can convince the relevant developers that Linux is a viable market, then perhaps the situation will change. On the other hand, there are loads of excellent games available for Linux.
