Subject : Installed Ubuntu but Getting Black Screen
It appears it installed successfully, but when I reboot all I get is a black screen. I am currently running Windows XP Professional, and I tried to install from a CD that was shipped to me, and also downloaded from this website just to make sure it wasn't the disk. When my PC boots up, I get the Dual Boot option and click to start Ubuntu. It shows the Ubuntu screen with the scrollbar, flashes a lot of I'm assuming drivers that are all "OK", then nothing. This is where I get the black screen. My PC has the following specs: 3.06 GHzCeleron Processor 1 Gig RAM 160 Gig Hard Drive (not even close to full) Service Pack 3 for Win XP Any help you can offer will be GREATLY appreciated!

In the Grub boot screen where you selected Ubuntu to boot Select boot into recovery mode. Then select fix x option. [Modified by: rokytnji on August 24, 2008 06:53 AM]

Is this a desktop or Laptop? If Desktop Are you plugging in your moniter to the onboard motherboard VGA plug or are you using a PCI type Video card? If it is plugged into the PCI video card try moving to the Motherboard supplied VGA plug. It sounds like you don't have the drivers in the kernel for the PCI video card installed in your Desktop. Just guessing because of the lack of detailed info given.

When you get the black screen, can you confirm if your system hangs or is still working? You can check this by maybe press the Caps Lock key. If the light comes on then you system is not hanging at the black screen. When you get the black screen, press Alt+Ctrl+F2. If you see a login screen, type in your username and password and type the command: dmesg At the bottom you should see some errors that might explain why you get the black screen. As rokytnji asked, what graphics card do you have? Also, what monitor do you have?

Did you run Ubuntu in Live cd mode before you installed it and did everything come up then?

Can you try burning a Knoppix or Mandriva cd. I say this because it looks as if you will need to install video drivers for Ubuntus GUI to come up. Sometimes when 1 distro won't boot up another 1 will.
