Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
Hi.
Ive only been using linux for a couple of weeks and i have an acer aspire one (linpus lite).
Ive managed to configure gnome-ppp to dial and connect to three mobile broadband, using a (huawei e160g)
Once connected i could not access the internet. i managed to find a post telling me how to add an additional gateway. After doing this all worked fine.
Since then i managed to mess up some setting while playing about with various things and had to re-install linpus!
Being a bit of an idiot i didn't make a note of how to add the gateway and cannot find the post to save my life.
Can anyone help please.
Cheers
Sam

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
CONFIGURING 3 MOBILE BROADBAND FOR LINPUS LITE (HUAWEI E160g)
Plug in your usb modem and turn on your AA1 (this is important, the AA1 will not properly detect you modem if power is already on)
1.ACTIVATE ADVANCED SETTINGS (if you havn't already!)
There is a walk through on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CmbYrvt3e8)
Open my documents, then click 'file', then 'terminal'.
Type: xfce-setting-show
Press enter
Click on 'desktop' tab
Click on 'behaviour' tab
Tick show desktop menu on right click
2.OPEN GNOME-PPP
Right click on desktop screen
Then move mouse over 'network' and click on 'GNOME PPP'
Type in your password (the one you chose when you first switched on) and press enter
3.CONFIGURE GNOME-PPP
In username type: three
In password type: three
Tick remember password
In phone number type: *99#
Click 'setup'
Click 'detect'
After a short while your modem will be detected
Click 'init strings'
In init 2 field enter: ATZ
In init 3 field enter: AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”three.co.uk”
Click 'close'
Click options and you can choose to minimise on connect (if u want)
4.CONNECT TO THREE
Click 'connect'
After around 30 seconds you should be connected
At this point you will not be able to surf the web, we need to edit a file first
5.SET PRIMARY DNS
Right click on the icon of two black screens at the bottom right of the desktop and then click 'connection log'
Scroll down to 'Primary DNS address' and copy the address, i.e. (172.31.140.69)
Click 'close'
Right click on the desktop
Click on 'terminal'
Type: sudo mousepad /etc/resolv.conf
Press enter
A new window will open
Delete the part that says 'generated by network manager do not edit'
Then type in nameserver
Press the space bar and then paste in the copied DNS address
Click f'ile'
Click 'save'
Close the window
Close the terminal
Open your browser and hopefully you can now surf via you 3 usb mobem.
GOOD LUCK and please let me know how you get on.

I bought an aspire one today and was told at PC world that it was compatible with my 3 modem. They obviously lied :(
I have followed the instrauctions on this post, and the utube video and have completed section one no problem.
I don't appear to have GNOME PPP in my network settings box, only
acercontact
browser
email
firefox
gFTP
Hotmail
RSS reader
Web Storage
Web video

Any suggestions please?

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
Ok, sorry my mistake. You probably need to install it.
To do this you wil firstl need to be connected to the internet, via wireless, or wired ethernet!
Connect to the internet then:
Right click the desktop
Navigate to system
Click on 'Add/Remove Software'
Type you root password
Press 'enter'
"Retrieving software information" will be displayed
When that has finished click on 'search'
Type 'gnome-ppp'
Press 'enter'
'gnome-ppp - 0.3.23-4.fc8.i386' will be displayed
Select the tick box
Click 'apply'
Now complete the on-screen installation
When it has finished, close package manager and hopefully you will now find Gnome-ppp under the network tab.

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
thanks aragonflux, i didn't think of that. Glad it worked for you
Anyone wanting another method could try using wvdial. It should already be installed on the AA1.
Boot up your machine with the dongle plugged in.
Turn on advanced mode as describe above.
Right click the desktop and open 'terminal'
type 'su - root'
Press 'enter'
Type you password (nothing will apear on the screen)
Press 'enter'
Type 'wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
A series of tests will be performed and a configuration file will be written and saved.
You now need to edit the wvdial.conf file
Type 'mousepad /etc/wvdial.conf'
A new window will open
Delete everything in the window
Copy and paste the text below in to the window
[Dialer defaults]
Phone = *99#
Username = username
Password = password
Stupid mode = 1
Dial command = ATDT
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","three.co.uk"
ISDN = 0
Modem type = Analog modem
Click 'file'
Click 'save'
Close the window
In terminal type 'wvdial'
You should now be connected
Pressing Ctrl + c on you keyboard will disconnect you
If you dont get internet connection in your browser you may need to set the 'primary DNS' as described in step 5 of configuring mobile broadband
Now whenever you want to connect just type 'wvdial' in terminal
(Note you will probably need to 'su - root' everytime you wish to use wvdial)
Hope this works for you. good luck

Should be AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”three.co.uk”

Hope this works

Im trying to find a way round this at the moment, The problem is when network manager connects to another connection i.e. wireless lan, it automatically writes over resolv.conf to set the DNS for that connection. If only 3G is used resolv.conf should remain the same even after reboot.

I have successfully installed gnome-ppp and also tried to connect using both *99# and *99***1#, plus changing the init 3 field to data.tre.se at the end.
When getting to the 5th step "Set primary DNS" I found the following information in the log:
--> Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!"
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.

ATM1L3DT*99#
+CME ERROR: SIM PIN required
--> Invalid dial command.
--> Disconnecting at Sat Sep 27 21:53:22 2008
Since the sim card for the dongle is new my guess is that it needs to be locked up/activated before I can use it. Does anyone know how to this? Or if there is a way around it on my AA1.
thanks

Hi Elin
You must be getting so frustrated by now!
My sim did not have a pin code when i bought it, but i think what you need to do is put it back in the cell phone and remove the pin code completly. Also if you have access to a windows based system try the modem in there and see if it works.

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
Just in case anyone is struggling, I bought the Aspire One last week and with limited linux knowledge I have unlocked the desktop functionality (which I'm really proud of!!) and installed cards, programs and additional hardware!! Its not that hard, nor as scary as it might first seem!! :-)
What I did about mobile broadband is simply plug in my Orange Icon 225 usb dongle (whilst the One was on, btw!). The Aspire One sorted everything out for me, ok I don't have the Orange software, but I haven't needed it. Just switch on, plug in and I'm off... even on a train!!!
I know I'll get tired of Linux Lite soon, but am using it as a learning curve so that I can load a 'real' version onto my big laptop soon :-)

CONFIGURING 3 MOBILE BROADBAND FOR LINPUS LITE (HUAWEI E160g)

"5.SET PRIMARY DNS"
"Right click on the icon of two black screens at the bottom right of the desktop"
However when I right click on this icon I don't get a "connection log" option. Although there is a box on the screen saying connected.
Maybe I'm missing something. I would appreciate any help or advice.

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
I've managed to unlock the pin code and also to remove it.
Now when trying to detect the modem in gnome-ppp, it tells me 'no modem was found'. When trying to connect it tells me again no modem was found and in the log I find the following text:
--> Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!"
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory
Does anyone know what I need to do to get the gnome-ppp thing to find the modem again?
I have a theory what might have happened... let me know if I'm wrong!
When trying to unlock the sim card I plugged the dongle into another computer with windows xp and did the whole installation thing. After installing I still wasn't able to access the internet (my normal luck I suppose...) and I couldn't find a way to remove the pin code. Instead I unlocked it using a 3G cellphone.
After I used the dongle (or tried to use it) on the windows computer gnome-ppp was no longer able to detect the modem?
Either I broke it or it was broken when I got it........ ?
I've been back to the store where I bought it and they have agreed to give me an additional week to try and get this to work before I need to return it to get my money back.
So I'm not quite ready to give up yet! I need all the help I can get!
Thanks!

Hi everybody.
I have found this post essential for getting my AAO online the only problem i have had is getting onto hotmail, (it seemed to treat the laptop like a mobile handset). A solution i found in another forum was to change the line--
In init 2 field enter: ATZ
In init 3 field enter: AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”three.co.uk”
to
In init 2 field enter: ATZ
In init 3 field enter: AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”3internet”
Hope this helps someone with the same problem as me (I'm a newbie too)

Hi, I'm new here and to Linux so have a question for you.
Tried to get irish vodafone E220 modem working on my daughters AA1.
Followed all instructions but for username and password used vodafone and didnt edit init strings (Init 2 was ATQ0 V1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0).
It connected fine and after setting primary DNS address I finally (after 2 weeks of reading posts on different websites and crying my eyes out) have got internet via vodafone modem.
The question is:
Have I done something terribly wrong and this will affect my monthly bill as I read in some forums that people got modems connected and internet up and running but then were hit with 300 – 400 Euro bills?
Thanks for help.

Apologies for bumping a dead thread but I wanted to first say a huge THANK YOU to Sam, 5 days straight I've been working on trying to get this thing to work and had almost given up when someone directed me to this thread. For the first time ever I was able to connect, yay!!
I'm running ubuntu and after I completed all of the steps, I went into firefox and it wouldn't load a page. It was "looking for google.co.uk" but never managed to load.
Is this because of my bad signal? Or do I need to reconfigure the DNS? I'm hoping beyond hope I can finally get this thing working...

Hi Sam
I hope you are still there!
I have tried all your suggestions and seemingly successfully installed gnome ppp. But I am repeatedly getting 'No modem found'.
Everything went ok until I hit detect and it couldn't find the modem. When I tried to connect to get a log report it said
Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do notedit this file by hand!"
WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
Cannot open /dev/modem: Device or resource busy
Cannot open /dev/modem: Device or resource busy
Cannot open /dev/modem: Device or resource busy
Do you have any suggestions as this is very depressing :(
thanks

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
Hi everyone. I'm totally new to Linux and have been trying for over a week to get my Huawei E220 modem (On 3) to work. Tried following all of the instructions you have all very kindly provided on here but nothing would work.
Then this morning I have run a Live Update from the Settings tab on the Aspire desktop and a new piece of software called 'Mobile Partner' downloaded. I'm now very easily and very quickly using my USB modem to access the internet. Took a bit of trial and error but just if you would like to try, this is what I did.
Once you have run Live Update and downloaded the patch:
1) Shut down the Aspire
2) Plug your modem into the USB port
3) Switch on the Aspire
4) On the 'Connect' Tab click on 'Mobile Partner'
5) It should now detect the modem
6) Click 'Tools' 'Options'
7) Click 'New'
8) Give your profile a name
9) Select 'Static' under the APN tab
10) in the APN box enter three.co.uk
11) In 'Access Number' enter *99#
12) In 'User Name' enter three
13) Password is three
14) Authentication Protocol is 'CHAP'
15) Click 'Save'
After doing that I was able to connect from the 'Connection' tab at the top of the screen.
Very happy now :-)
Hope that helps those of you who are having problems getting it to work.

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
Hello Sam
I have the acer with linpus. I have followed the instructions exactly and the acer aspire one (linpus) is connected through the mobile broadband. I know this beacause it says connected and the timer continues until i press disconnect.
However, when I try to browse, the browser (mozilla firefox) does not work and thus I have not been able to browse the net at all with mobile broadband, the modem being e169g on 3 mobile broadband UK.
Having said this the internet does work on my wireless home broadband connection, whilst using mozilla firefox.
I don't know what the solution is. Could you please advise me?

Re(1): Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
Similarly I received Mobile partner through an upgrade on my Asus One. I didn't realise what it was at first but a little investigation around the forums had me down the 3 shop buying a 3g dongle. Like you I filled in all the setup fields as above and the dongle connects (goes blue) and disconnects through the software as it should. The connection manager also sees the 3g device but the connect field is greyed out and is not selectable. Being a complete linux dumbo I feel as if I'm almost there but am stuck as to what to do next so I await further comments on this forum with interest.

Hi Guys, if you have been using gnome ppp (as I had) you need to go back and reset the nameserver to 172.31.140.69 "sudo mousepad /etc/resolv.conf" then type "nameserver" space then "172.31.140.69" .As far as the greyed out connect bar have you tried in mobile partner interface, tools>options>network>registration mode click manual search and register wait for a minute or so and then choose UK20 3G and click the register button. I don't know for certain this will work but it is what I did and it worked for me. Hope this helps.

OK everyone - as far as I am concerned this is a weird situation which has not been covered yet. I tried gnomee ppp and it didn't work, likewise with WVdial. I thought I was on to a winner with Mobile Partner and thought I had it connected. This is the weird thing..... the modem looks as though it has connected as the light is solid blue but the connection in the tool tray says not connected. Despite the fact that I have no connection, I can connect to Skype and aMSN and use them properly. However, Firefox tells me it is offline. Because I don't have the 2 boxes in the notification area, I cannot try and reset the primary DNS servers to see if that is the problem. I tried typing it is with the "sudo mousepad" suggestion but that just returned bad command. So am at a complete loss as to how come I am connected but not at the same time!
Any ideas? As with the last post - it is very frustrating!

No - sorry - I am still needing help myself. If you have Mobile Partner - which you should be able to get as an update, the once you have followed the directions posted above about Mobile Partner, there is a connect tab on that page.
Sorry not to be more helpful.
I have data uploading and downloading according to the stats and no connection!

My system has recently updated and installed Huawei mobile partner, which can be found under network when right clicking the desktop. Once this has installed gnome and wvdial no longer function. mobile partner is easy to set up tho and enables hot plugging of the dongle. it also gives detailed connection information. anyone having trouble should look in to this!

I couldnt not get my E220 to work on the AAO. I had seen two other methods on the net I tried and neither worked.
I decided to restore the SSD using the recovery dvd and use your method and it worked great.
One problem I did get is when starting Mobile Partner it detected the modem then it would say the device has been disconnected, then after a while reconnected, then disconnected and it kept doing this. I couldnt connect to the net.
I put the modem in my Windows XP laptop, ran the file on the modem called modem reset I think it was. I also upgraded the firmware to the latest which also enables support for 7.2Mbps and then plugged the modem back in the AAO and it all works fine now.

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
Hi I've just found and joined this forum, being very new to Linux having bought the Aspire One from Tesco and a Huawei E160G three mobile broadband dongle from carphone warehouse last week.
I have followed the instructions above for updating and using the Mobile Partner which didn't seem to work, so followed the instructions for gnome-ppp, whereby I got a connection and was able to use both the browser and email client.
I then restarted the Aspire with the dongle disconnected and activated the wireless network and connected through my router to my home broadband network. Then disconnected the wireless, closed down and restarted with the 3 dongle connected. Mobile partner now justs locks up, gnome-ppp will not connect, so I followed the instructions to use wvdial. In both gnome-ppp and wvdial when I check the log the error is "no carrier".
I have since connected the dongle to my windows XP desktop and it works fine with a low strength connection.
I then connected it back to the Aspire One but still getting "no Carrier" error can anyone help please.

For all you people who have the E220 and have done what bunnyman said. ie update firmware and install mobile partner
If you still cant get mobile partner to work, i have worked out that if you boot up the system , you MUST go STRAIGHT to connect icons > mobile partner and then select your profile and connect it. You will get a 'detecting modem message and your modem will connect.
If before doing this, you go to the two icons with the computers and cross at the bottom of the screen, or the connection manager and click on any other connection at all or even the same connection you are already on, you will get a disconnected message appear. This effectively trips the modem and it will not function properly when you go to the Mobile Partner. You will then find the mobile partner detects the modem and tries to connect but nothing happens and the modem just flashes. This is because it has tripped and is now useless.
If this happens, simply pull the modem out of the usb port and put it back in again. Let the mobile partner detect the modem again and then select profile and then click connect.
Or reboot the system and go straight to mobile partner and select profile then connent.
To all those with NO INTERNET CONNECTION TO INSTALL UPDATES in the first place, find another pc with internet and go to
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_one_110.html
and download the drivers and applications/ huawei081126.sh
this is 'Mobile partner'. save it to disk and then install it into your acer.
you also need to take your modem to another computer and update the firmware from mobile broadband rocks as above, I used a vista PC to do this and it worked fine. Xp works as well.
Run the reset prog in the modems files awell, just in case, then stick the updated modem back into your acer with mobile partner installed.

Hi.
I have tried everything on here to get my E156G to work on my Acer. Now 5 hours on and still unable to connect.
Most recently I reset the modem via a Vista PC (that was fine) and tried everything again and still nothing. I noticed that when I querried the dongle on Linux it came back as a E220 although it says E156G on the dongle itself. I tried everything posted on here for all versions. Did notice that the DNS server settings don't change when I close the terminal windows down as went back in and it reverted back with the primary and secondary DNS entries whereas I prevously deleted them as per one set of instructions.
I configured all the settings for the below title from Sam posted and tried everything else. Anyone got any other suggestions as I am outta ideas on trying to get this to work.

Re: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband
Ok found this on another forum, just tried it and it finally works :
Aspire One with 3 using a E169 3G Modem
This system is up and running:
Firstly, use a wired Internet connection to make sure you have installed all the latest updates, that at this time include updates for the Huawei E169 3G modem currently used by Virgin Broadband, e.g. go to Settings and then run Live Update.
Having done that, click the arrow to display all the standard applications for Connect.
Double-click the Mobile Partner icon.
Select the Tools menu then Options. In the left-hand side selection box, Profile Management should be highlighted.
Click New and give an appropriate Profile Name such as 3 UK
Under APN select Static and enter the APN: 3internet
Under Authentication, the Access Number should already be showing *99#
leave the the username field empty
leave the the Password field empty
Under Authentication Protocol Settings, select PAP and then save the settings.
Once it is setup, from within Mobile Partner, ensure the appropriate profile is selected and click Connect.
Once a connection has been established, minimize Mobile Partner, e.g. don't close it!
You can now start browsing the Internet, making Skype calls, etc
That's it. As long as you have the recent updates installed, its even easier to setup the Linux Acer Aspire One for 3 Broadband than it is to install and set it up for Windows or Mac.

Hi all!
Im yet another novice at Linux.
Ive been trying to get mobile broadband installed and have so far been unsuccessfull, after trying o2. I also contacted all the other network providers of which none seem to be linux friendly! Also the modem recommended to get was the e220 from 3 mobile, which unfortunately my local 3 mobile shop no longer supply.
After much reading through the posts on these pages ive noticed alot of people have successfully set up a connection on the 3 mobile broadband.
Also checked on the driver downloads from the acer site using the link shown on one of the replys, ive noticed that this link goes to the page for the AA1 110.
Ive purcheased the AA1 150 and cant see a patch for 3 mobile.
Can anyone help me out , is there anything out there for the AA1 150 to help connect to 3 mobile broadband?

Hi
If you do your updates, you should find a piece of software called Mobile Partner. If you go back through this thread, there are plenty of posts to tell you then how to set it up. You will need to access a wireless network to do your updates obviously, but after that you should be able to use the dongle without any problem.
Good luck!

I have a Sprint Sierra Wireless USB modem and I just got the Linux setup pdf from them today. Here is a link to it:
http://www4.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/downloads/Sprint_Mobile_Broadband_Setup_Guide.pdf
On Page 4 it goes into how to setup the usbserial device using modprobe. There is a table of Sprint's modems (3 are USB devices). Note that you will need your device's vendor and product ID codes. I have tested this on my system, and it gives me a good PPP connection to the internet with my Sierra AC595U modem. I hope this helps.

Hey peeps!
Ive downloaded the update patches on my AA1 150! Got the 3g patch and a couple of patches on Huawei. Now when i plug in my E156 in the connection manager it shows 3g network (shadowed text) and an auto connect function for the dongle. Unfortunately none of them work and it just flashes up network disconnected.
Ive read through alot of the threads, and judging by it so far it appears they are all centered around th AA1 110 model, am i right? Is there a difference between the running of the AA1 110 and the AA1 150? I cant seem to find the software entitled Mobile Partner!
Double checked on my live updates and the unit is fully updated!
Seems im half way there but not quite able to get any further.
If anyone can assist me using some simpilar terms or by detailed walk through i would realy appreciate it.
Im away for the next couple of days and will be taking the unit with me but will only be able to connect in Wifi areas!
If anyone can help me please email me at rossk27@o2.co.uk
Ill be able to retreive your mails and respond to them using my phone which would be far easier and quicker if im unable to access the internet.
Hope to hear from someone soon
