Hey all I'm having a little trouble. I've recently bought a Compaq laptop that is being run on Windows 2000 but would like to change it over to a linux O/S as i've heard a lot of good things about it. The only problem is the laptop has low RAM (192MB). Which would be the best one to install with that kind of memory? Thanks

There are several distros that work well with low resource PCs, Kubuntu is very user friendly as are DSL (Damn Small Linux) and Puppy Linux. You can learn more about them here: http://www.linux.com/download_linux/ I would strongly recommend that you upgrade your memory too. You can pick up 512k of DDR for around $25. An investment well worth the price.

sadly I cant upgrade it any further. The laptop is a Compaq Evo N200 and they max out at 192mb. So I need to figure out what would be suited for a laptop like that.

The distro isn't really what you should worry about, its the GUI you use on it that usually sucks up the most memory. Really my suggestion would be to either do Kubuntu (its still a pretty easy distro to use from what I hear) and turn all the graphic effects / transistions all the way down (it *should* prompt you when it starts up to do it after your first login), OR get a Fedora install and use a lightweight window manager like fluxbox. Fluxbox is very fast, and uses very little memory. The trade off is that its also very very simple, and if you want to do something with it you have to edit the config files by hand (I'd be more the willing to walk you thru that if you needed help). some fluxbox screenshots here: http://www.lynucs.org/?fluxbox

No worries, any of the three distros I suggested above will work with what you have. Additional RAM just makes it a little sweeter.

Linux Mint has a fluxbox community edition that would probably work well with those specs. http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=29 Also try Tinyme based on PCLinuxOS.
