Which is the right Distro for me?
Well, i'm looking for a new Distro for my PC. i'm actually running a Intel dual-core based windows xp pc, 2GB ram and enough diskspace for 2 operating system. the only important thing ist the grafics, it's a Nvidia 8800GTS 512mb (that might be usefull for questions about 3D-desktop stuff). so my computer should be able to run ery distro well.
i tried linuy several times before, but i alwas became back to windows 'cos of the multimedia things and problems with dual-booting. i need to use windows from time to time, so i don't need a distro that kicks of my windows ;)
what i need is not that much:
- Multimedia Stuff
i don't care that much about "all-free software" so flashplayer, musik&video codecs should be in-biult or easy(!) to add. my favourite browser is firefox, but i can change if there are browsers out there that support multimedia in linux better.
Nice Graphics& 3D Stuff
nice to have, things like beryl/compiz-fusion or what it's actually called... as said, my GF-card is an nvidia 8800 and i got problems before choosing&setting up the right driver. this isn't a distro-problem i think, but if there are distros that don't support them, i don't want them :P
and it should have an easy installation-prog, i don't wan't the gento-disaster again :P would be nice if basic-settings for the desktop-environment could be done with a graphic programm, too.
Individuality& compability
i don't know to call that in english, but i like a desktop environment that i can change and add diferent styles like that (i prefer gnome after all i've seen)
software should be compatible with the "usual" linux stuff like .deb or .rpm, ideal would be a managing software or things like that.
by the way, is there any way to synchronize a itunes library with a media player in linux? it doesn't has to work with the ipods, just listening to the music on the linux would be great enough :)
i hope you can help me choosing the right distro and software
Ruedi -
PS: if you wan't to ask me more questions or just talk, im in msn under ruewoxx[at]bluewin.ch or in this thread, of course

Sounds to me like Linux Mint was built for you: http://www.linuxmint.com/
It's based on Ubuntu, GNOME desktop, multimedia out of the box, a few in house tools to make configuration and such easier. I would go with the new Mint 6 Beta - I found it perfectly stable when I tested it out, and the stable release should be coming soon, though it's running a little late: http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=465
And there are a number of programs that will sync to your ipod. I use gpodder for podcasts, and the default music player in Mint and Ubuntu, Rythmbox, should be able to sync to ipods as well. Banshee, another native GNOME app, does as well.
