I have been looking for a small efficient linux for years now, a splashtop. This linux should boot x-win within 3-5seconds from grub, and only contain a web browser, notepad, calculator and pdf viewer. Preferrably including the pppoe and pppoeconf from dsl which can kickstart any mobile broadband modem. Was hoping a lot for dsl, pups and slitaz but dsl and pups are boiling my cpu and they are pretty bloated. The ubutnu 8.10 is in my view totally unuseful, asking for more diskspace than even microsoft. Im not trying to offend anyone, just expressing my opinion of development. Any tips of a suitable linux is most appreciated. Could someone also please notify the guys at dsl forum to let new users post, dsl forum has been closed for almost a year now for new users and I want to peptalk them not to follow puppy and close down the project. //peter, sweden.

Compadres. Thank you for your interest. I have been into deadmini, 1diskxwin, basiclinux, ttylinux and more. All of them has different limitations, they are not complete and they are difficult getting information about since they are more or less deserted projects. The tinycorelinux project took one step back when divorcing from dsl since it was possible adding dsl packs, but it is by now one of the most promising microlinuxes, I follow them with great interest. Currently Im trying copying modem drivers from pups to slitaz cooking hoping that is least work getting to my goal. More tips are most appreciated, I have gone through most linuxes on this link http://www.linuxlinks.com/Distributions/Mini_Distributions/ whitout finding what Im looking for. Sounds like it was made for ya.

I seriously doubt you will get any current mini Linux distro to boot X and modules needed for ppp within the time frame of 3-5 seconds. You are basically dreaming - would be nice, I know - but you're dreaming. Splashtop doesn't even do it in that time...

A perfectly usable system, IMHO.

A bootstrap loader that can take a hibernated image and load it would work, but I don't know of anything like that out-of-the-box. The Android OS boots like that on a phone, as does the OpenMoko Linux phone OS. These are good places to start, I think. The bootstrap loader is the key part.
