I am using Ubuntu 8.10 at the moment.
I hope to get an anti-virus software which updates everyday.

You don't really need an anti-virus with LInux, but if you want one so you can scan files that you might share with a Windows user, AVG and Avast are both good ones. You can go to download.com for either one or, google the names an go to their respective download sites.

I installed AVG but I found it cannot update, and I cannot find the way to install, what can I do? Just keep it?

As Waxon says, unless you are serving files from your Ubuntu machine to Windows machines you do NOT need anti-virus software. If you are serving files as described above use Clam AV, not AVG. AVG is for Windows only.

Okay, I'm sorry. I forgot about the update glitch with AVG and Ubuntu.
Here is the link to solving the issue that has some nice screen caps to help guide you. Scroll down about one-third of the way down the page. You'll see the applicable section. It says feisty but its the same for 8.10
