Well, Im currently using Vista Home Premium and I AM FED UP WITH IT. This is the worst OS Ive ever used. I've kept it for about a year now hoping to see improvements form MS and now I'm tired of waiting. I'm pretty experienced when it comes to computers but I have never...no NEVER used linux. I have considered it in the past but it was to easy to get XP Pro for free :D I actually bought this otherwise nice laptop (hp dv9000) with Vista pre-installed. That being said Im looking for a distro thats at least somewhat user friendly that has good compatibility. I know thats kind of vague but I really dont know what to expect or ask for from Linux. I like to do some mild gaming, DVD making, and everyday browsing. I also download alot of media, create digital media, photo manipulation, etc. Its really important that its media friendly, im a sailor in the Navy and this is my main source of entertainment when im at sea for long periods of time! PLEASE HELP! If this works well I will be building a dualboot desktop with Linux.</div>

There are lots of great distros. to choose from, and I'm sure that other will be suggested here. But I think that Ubuntu will keep you happy, and once you've used it, you could always try other distros.

If you liked the graphics of vista then try Mandriva, It comes with the compiz fusion included. You just need to use emerald to get the glassy windows. With emerald and compiz fusion, you have all the vista graphics.... not to mention they work smoothly even on 1GB ram unlike vista which needs 2GB min<p class="hiddensignature">

I have the same laptop as you do, and I would definitely recommend Ubuntu 7.10. If you're new to linux, try the i386 version instead of the 86_64 - you've got a 64-bit processor, but to new users, trying to get flash and java and such working correctly on a 64-bit platform right now is a huge headache.

You'll need to pass a few boot options to get the install to work correctly - the installer doesn't like the dv9000's, but once it's installed it works fine. I think the options I usually use are noapic irqpoll noirqdebug, so when you've got your disc in the drive and it gives you the &quot;Start up or install ubuntu&quot;... etc messages, hit F6, then type &quot;noapic irqpoll noirqdebug&quot; and hit enter, then you should be all set.

Ubuntu also has compiz fusion enabled by default, and it works very well on a 1GB dv9000 - Vista hardly ran on mine, too. :P

Edit: It's plenty media-friendly, too - just open the Synaptic package manager, enable the extra software repositories, then install ubuntu-restricted-extras, I think, is the name, and you'll be pretty much set to play almost anything. :)

Hi guys - I have a similar question - I am looking at switching to a &quot;linux&quot; dual boot system (not sure if some of the games will work) on an HP nx6110 (1.4GHz processor, 768Mb ram, 40Gb HDD, Broadcom Wifi). Would Ubuntu be the easist way to get into Linux, or would you suggest some other &quot;flavour&quot;? Thanks in advance. </div>

I like ubuntu and am actually leaning on wanting to use one of it's derivatives.
but I would suggest you go here (http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/), or head on over to distrowatch.com (like I did) and read up on the distros out there. based my decision on each sites hit count (and ubuntu is at number 1 right now) and the more people who use the distro, the more you people you can ask for help :)

there's a certain linux distro that mimics winXP's interface, maybe something for you to start on?

and on what flavour of ubuntu, Ubuntu (gnome-based) is should be handled by your computer easily, Kubuntu (KDE) and Xubuntu (XFCE) have a tad less... eye-candy appeal, though you can certainly pimp them out manually. the new KDE4 looks good nonetheless.

Ubuntu is great, but for the beginner it can be frustrating to realize you have to set it up to play youtube videos, mp3s, or DVDs. If you don't want to mess with that but still use a very similar but more stream-lined distro, I'd suggest Linux Mint, which is based off of Ubuntu. </div>

i haven't tested much, but kiwi and gnewsense does that as well, though I'd still vote for mint just because it looks and feels very different from ubuntu while the formers still had a very ubuntu feel on it. Kiwi states that they purposely did that to be minimalist... and though I haven't tinkered much, just getting the codec from repositories and resmacking them to a livecd is... bleh...

dreamlinux seems to do the same. it's debian based, which is the basis of ubuntu as well. </div>

I'd suggest that you go for Mandriva 2008.1 x86 for starters. Add PLF package sources (http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/) and get yourself all the codecs, libraries and apps you would need for a fun desktop. Do that with the rpmdrake utility. The PLF source provides all packages that Mandriva it self cant support due to various reasons. Remember to have the ATI or NVIDIA (depending of your video card) drivers installed.
Once you have gotten your way around with Linux you'll probably get into the common &quot;Iwannatryitall&quot; stage and then pick a distro of your convenience. Though I've been using Linux for a lot of years now I stick to Mandriva because of I've gotten past the stage where I want to be my own handyman. Now I just want things to work and actually do something useful with my box. If Mandriva does not please you, Ubuntu is a good desktop too. </div>

[quote=Ante]I like ubuntu and am actually leaning on wanting to use one of it's derivatives.
but I would suggest you go here (http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/), or head on over to distrowatch.com (like I did) and read up on the distros out there. based my decision on each sites hit count (and ubuntu is at number 1 right now) and the more people who use the distro, the more you people you can ask for help :)

there's a certain linux distro that mimics winXP's interface, maybe something for you to start on?

and on what flavour of ubuntu, Ubuntu (gnome-based) is should be handled by your computer easily, Kubuntu (KDE) and Xubuntu (XFCE) have a tad less... eye-candy appeal, though you can certainly pimp them out manually. the new KDE4 looks good nonetheless.
