Subject: Splash screen problem.
Hi, whenever I boot into Linux(Ubuntu 7.10), my splash screen won't show because it's resolution is too high. My monitor says to change the res. Any software that can fix that? ~wiiplayer12

That sounds unusual. What's the resolution limit of your monitor? Does X run properly?

X is the graphics server system that Linux uses to producer your graphic user interface (GUI). Are you able to run a normal Ubuntu desktop, presumably Gnome? If yes... I'm on the road right now and don't have a Gnome desktop with me. If anyone reading this out there does, could you please the menu steps to access the X settings? Wiiplayer, if someone does, then follow the steps and post the results. Be sure that the settings are compatible with your monitor. if not, it is fairly easy to play around with the resolution.

Well then, X is working fine, and I do not know where to find the settings, let's hope that someone else replies to this... ~wiiplayer12

Wiiplayer, I'm guessig here, but look under System or Administration, or anything like that on your menu, and then look for a Display heading. Alternatively, see if you have a file xorg.conf in /etc/X11. Look for "Section Monitor" and post the resolution settings that you see there. Sorry that I can't be more helpful. I'm working off a ASUS Eee PC while away. Love it, but I only have KDE on it, and limited access.

here is what i found: Section "Monitor" Identifier "MAGNAVOX" Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Intel Corporation 82G965 Integrated Graphics Controller" Monitor "MAGNAVOX" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Modes "1280x1024" "1280x800" "1280x768" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection So, there are two resolutions that look way too big for my monitor, do i delete them? ~Wiiplayer12 [Modified by: Wiiplayer12 on April 16, 2008 04:58 AM]

Backup the file, and then remove the resolutions that are too large and let's see if that works. Also, take a look at the Ubuntu package USplash.

Yes, you _must_ be root to edit system files! And just Google USplash and you should be able to find it. Better yet, try sudo apt-get install USplash and see if that works for you.

ok, I went to root and deleted those two, still the same. I saw something for changing resolution on USplash by putting vga=0x317 at the end of a line, nothing happened. so i was thinking, maybe the resolution mght be too low, you think i should try deleting the last two? Thanks for all of this help, ~Wiiplayer12

Wow, now I'm just guessing. Sure go ahead and try it. At least you're learning a lot of other stuff!
