Help for a newbie.

Computer games are mostly OS dependent. Not all games that are released will be compatible in both windows and linux.You can check game CD box to check if is linux compatible or not. I personally never had any experience playing high graphics oriented games in linux.

Wine translates Windows API calls into something Linux can use. It also translates DirectX calls to OpenGL calls. Many games and applications run, including newly released titles, but you need to have a serious computer to play modern games at the same graphics levels. Wine is great for simple, older things - they'll run like Linux or Wine is not even there. But for cutting-edge gaming, you're going to really tax your performance using it. My suggestion is to dual boot between Windows and Linux. On another note, Linux is a very serious gaming platform, it's just not as recognized as Windows is. I remember a Windows vs Linux FPS test on a game that was made for both OSes, and Linux had much better score. The researchers were pretty surprised and it made a silent shock wave around the internet for a little while. I totally forget which game it was though. Anyway, I'm just making a point.
