One usually boots from Live USB flash drives. Unless I'm not understanding what your trying to do.

Format it, install a MBR, and everything. Set your computer's BIOS to boot from USB, and away you go. BE VERY CAREFUL that you don't format your hard drive accidentally - check the disk sizes!! www.archlinux.org
