Subject: Which Linux???
Can someone please advise me to which Linux is the best to us?.
I would like to use it on a desktop pc, I am curently using Vista and would like Vista to end up where general custer did.
My usage is emailing, blogs, internet, photography, Videography, music and some games and would also like to design a webpage. I do not know if all this is helpful because I have never used Linux before I am a senior and would like something graphical and easy to use and has a wide range of software to extend it to.
Also I would like to know does any Linux programs go with any Linux platform.
I hope all this makes sense and that someone can help me I hope this leads to a very fruitful experience with Linux. Things are getting so bad that now you have to pay Microsoft if you want to be able to view hotmail through outlook, I mean how much money does Microsoft want anyway.
Thanks look forward to a reply

I am currently running Ubuntu and openSUSE 10.3. Both are great OS's but I would recommend Ubuntu being a new user myself I have found it to be more user friendly. Good Luck

Other nice option is Mandriva, there are three sizes you can download : Mandriva Mini, it is a CD with a very basic system install, but once installed you can download more packages. Other is Mandriva One wich is a live CD you can run without installing and give it a try, if you like it you can install it. it is a very nice desktop system and it should cover most (if not all of your needs), the other is the Mandriva Free DVD, it is basically the same just with most of the applications included in the DVD. Give them a try.
Good luck

Julian, welcome to Linux and Linux.com. I suggest you try one of Fedora, Ubuntu, Mandriva or OpenSUSE. All these are pretty easy to use and are newbie-friendly. Plus, they have excellent documentation and a large and active user community with forums, wikis, etc. so you'll never be lost.
As for your needs, any Linux distribution can be used for email, blog, internet, photography, Videography, music. Could you elaborate on your music, videography and photography needs.
If you wish to just listen to music, that's no problem at all. Linux can handle almost all multimedia formats. If you wish to create your own music, or something, there is Rosegarden, Ardour, etc. that you can look into. There's also SoX, which is a command-line tool to manipulate audio files.
For photograhy, do you just want a image viewer/browser that can do slideshows or do you wish to edit your images as well? Again, there are lots of applications that help you do both. You can try Gthumb and GQview for slideshows and GIMP to modify images.
For videography, do you mean editing videos or just playing videos. I assume editing videos. You can do that using any number of applications like Kdenlives, Kino, etc.
For creating a webpage you can use NVU or Seamonkey, etc.
All the applications I just mentioned can be installed in just about all Linux distributions.

Also, graphic cards and wireless cards aren't a problem with Linux either. And, there's a wide range of scanners and printers that are also supported.
This marks the end of the best Linux advertisement :)
Cheers!

welcome to the forums Julian!!
for a new user,i'd suggest Ubuntu.Debian is good and easy as well.
for a user to explore and play with different "flavors" i'd say go to http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php and download live ISO's and then burn them to cds and try them out.the live cds run in memory and wont install to the hard drive.Knoppix is awesome and is a live cd or you can also install it.everything in knoppix works!!
for a new user,Ubuntu and Debian are easy and user friendly.and THOUSANDS of software packages for you to explore and try.
also bookmark www.sourceforge.net and www.freshmeat.com

Welcome Julian!
Long time linux geek. But first time poster here.. I agree with all the choices that have been stated so far. However, I will through in my own 2 cents here.. I've had a lot of luck converting windows users with Linux mint. Which is a derivative of Ubuntu. It's a great distro, with most all of the codecs and what not you will need installed from the start. Also many windows users find the menu arrangement very easy to get used to. And for your purposes there are tons of one-click install applications available. But like I said, everyone had great recommendations. That's the beauty you will find in the open source world. You have the freedom to find, try and keep what you like. ;)
