Subject: costumizable liveCD/install disk
came across NimbleX a couple of days ago and was wondering if there are any other distros out the that offer a similar way of building a live/install CD. basically with NimbleX you can make CD and with a few checkboxes, will include the only the stuff that you want. I can probably acheive the same result if I remaster a small distro such as Puppy or maybe even DSL but since the computer I can tinker with does not have an internet connection, NimbleX's way of doing it is really cool. EDIT: I realize that this has obviously been asked three hundred forty-nine million, nine hundred sixty-four thousand, two hundred and fourteen times already, and I did do my research beforehand. a few have stated knoppix and gentoo. Puppy, I'm sure can be remastered and DSL should be easy as well. But none do that thing NimbleX does, which is just checkbox here and there and you got yourself a distro. I really do want to have as small a HDD installation as possible with minimal bloat, etc etc etc.

Fedora had that feature. i have been wanting to know that as well,as i'd like to make a Ubuntu gaming cd with 3d drivers and Unreal Tournament 2003/4 map and game pack/skins all included. i do know you need a lot of memory to get the ISO image and all your packages worked out.and it should run in a virtual machine for testing, hence part of the reason for the memory needs.Ubuntu Offers a minimalist ISO image, which would be great to build off of. you can also install say that same minimalist image, and add the packages/updates you want or need, then create an ISO image you could then pass around.but i am unsure how an ISO of YOUR comp would go over if some one wanted to install elsewhere. but it would be good to have a totally awesome back up for your comp. I see, Fedora... I have read about doing what you said about ubuntu and have found both the barebones ubuntu and a couple of recompiling software. The problem with that is that the computer I can use to do the remastering does not have an internet connection so no apt get. I'll check out Fedora.

I guess I forgot to add this on the first post.. I'm trying to make a custom distro, not necessarilky for circulation, with as minimal bloat as possible, thus why I was focused on remastering Puppy and DSL more. I am aware of the CD/Repo thing Debian has been doing, but again, minimal bloat. off topic, techninally I shouldbe welcoming you. WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!

now I don't want to start anything here, but didn't I just say that the computer I'm using _does not_ have an internet connection? thus installing via liveCD, then downloading the packages via synaptic then recompiling/remasting is not doable... :(

Ante, I think before anyone will be able to help you, you will need to describe exactly what resources you have in much greater detail. Moofs is not failing to pay attention here; it's just that your description of the situation is confusing. Obviously right now you *do* have some sort of Internet access (since you are posting), plus there is no way that you will be able to acquire ISOs of any Linux distro without Internet access. Finally, you must have some sort of working Linux installation in order to "remaster" a distro for use on another machine (like mentioned in the first post). So, please list how many machines are involved, what is running on each, and what their connection status is. That will go a long way towards helping to find a solution. Thanks, Nate

very well... supressing sarcasm here, bare with me if sentences seem broken. 1. 'puter cafe, a friend works here and will let me hog the bandwidth with downloads given there's few people around. 2. my 'puter, no internet connection. obviously, I can't just pop in an ubuntu core installer, isntall and remaster away. Now, NimbleX functions a tad differently from remastering, as all that is done on the server and an ISO is puked out after selecting a few options. very spiffy, but limited. hence the original question: [i] was wondering if there are any other distros out the that offer a similar way of building a live/install CD.

As is also mentioned more than once in your initial post, there are probably other ways to achieve the same result; there is no reason to treat other forum participants sarcastically for trying to propose other solutions to the problem, and it is unlikely to further the discussion. That's why I suggested that if Moofs was not catching the details of the situation it would be best to describe the problem in more detail. If you want to pursue that topic, I think there are definitely people here who might could help; but if all you want is an answer to the question "is there another distro that does exactly what NimbleX does" -- that seems pretty clearly to be no. Thanks, Nate
