Hi John I have a Dell L400 with 256mb of ram, and I have been installing several releases of Mandriva Linux, right now I am on the 2008.1 or 2008 spring. All of them worked just fine. (I am a Mandriva fan, it usually handles any hardware I throw at it). About Windows vs Linux, well IMHO, Linux and friends just works better, They are both very capable OSes, but Linux works better for me. Good luck

here is the latest puppy http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads/official-releases/puppy-linux-400-dingo not sure on the knoppix.hmm i think download from the site closest to you geographically should work. some linux ask what architechture and then offer an ISO image(The same image as when cd's are made) and some dont, they have it all on the cd and it installs what it needs. i'd try knoppix first,as it is very likey most everything "will just work right off" the first try. Tried,Knoppix,Puppy, and Mandriva............but settled on Freespire 2.0.8....so far its running well,it was a snap to install, picked up all my hardware...Im so used to XP,..........I have so many questions...here are my first two. 1)Im real big on keeping windows clean,i.e.....Ccleaner,Diskeeper,Glary utilities,AVG,Spybot, etc.,etc what would i need to do and install to keep linux running nice and clean. 2)power options,....I figured out how to configure monitor power schemes in Kpowersave ,but is there any application that will also place the computer itself like in standby mode (like xp standby mode).....I have a hibernate button when i click on logout but the only thing it does is kick the screensaver on and logs you out............thx in advance

Yup. I've had years of troble attempting to install Ubuntu, but mandv\riva worked the first time I tried. I haven't got it quite figured out yet, but so far i'm a fan.
