Subject: Ubuntu 8.04 clean install - low res, low sound, no java apps
I'm about as green as they can be when it comes to linux. I saw beryl and said I have to try this. Well I just did a clean install and nothing seems to be working right. Problem 1: I have a dell with onboard graphics (sorry don't have the exact specs at the moment). My max resolution is 640 x 480 after installing the recommended restricted driver. Problem 2: My sound plays extremely low, but I read somewhere the updates I'm currently downloading will fix that problem. I'll keep you posted. Problem 3: Firefox is not displaying any java applets. There's 4 java choices when I try to install. What should I use and how can I get it to work with firefox. Oh and where do you go to change the settings so that my videos and all those lovely ads and stuff display automatically? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have read the forums about the nvidia problem but nothing seems to work for my particular situation. Let me know what iyou need; nfo, logs, etc..

Problem 1: This should solve your problem with the screen resolution. I posted this a week or so ago. Its near the bottom of the page, maybe the third or fourth from the last post there. http://www.linux.com/forums/topic/1875 Problem 2: Right click on the master volume control icon in the upper right hand corner and make sure that all the appropriate volume switches are not muted and set at a good level. Problem 3: In the Firefox browser, click, Edit> Preferences> Content, and make sure Java and Java Script are enabled. Hope this helps.

If it ain't broke, you aren't trying hard enough.

I'll give all that a try. The resolution solution is one I never heard of before. I'll report back soon

Thanks for the help! Everything works fine now. I guess the java problem was related to the monitor because as soon as I got the monitor working everything else fell into place. I do however have one more question, if a program doesn't appear in synaptic how do u install it? For instance, I want to put aim on the computer to see how it compares to pidgin.
