Most software installation is via the Ubuntu repositories accessed using "Add/Remove Applications". If you choose to install software from source (requiring compilation) or using a deb package manually, it's more complicated. Here's a handy site covering many options: http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/

Java is already installed in Ubuntu, but sounds like you're missing a necessary component. This game is played via a browser?? Either way, you can have Ubuntu do the installation for you, or you can install the package you downloaded (if you got the right one) using the above instructions. See here for more specific details (hopefully what you are looking for): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FirefoxPlugins https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java

Sure, that's how it works in Windows using precompiled binary files and executable files that perform all the installation steps. Installation from software repositories is even easier in Linux - just click and accept in the package manager. The package manager presents you with a library of software choices and, based on your selections, will download, install, and maintain them for you. Updates to your entire system (security for the OS and ALL installed software) are then provided routinely (with a few clicks on the automatic reminders). Of course, in some versions of linux choosing to upgrade everything to the latest version (if you choose that setting) can be hazardous, but Ubuntu carefully filters the automatic updates to avoid this. You can still upgrade beyond the version of a package they automatically provide, but have to do it with altered repositories/manually. [Modified by: Bob on June 13, 2008 11:32 PM]
