NTFS is one of the filesystems that Vista will use. It needs to have a compatibly formatted partition for installation, and it cannot use a Linux filesystem. So, your choices are to either use Ubuntu to create a new partition for Vista, or re-install Vista over Ubuntu.

Just remember, Linux distributions and Windows can't co-exist on the same partition. Since you used up the whole disk for Ubuntu, you can't install Windows on it, without either creating a new partition on it or formatting it as NTFS. Linux filesystems (ext2, ext3, reiserfs, etc.) are incompatible with Windows filesystems (fat, ntfs), so, they both require different partitions formatted as different filesystems.

In case you don't have any important data on your Ubuntu, or can back it up easily, you can just start over. Pop in the Windows CD, and during the installation create partition for Windows. Once Windows is installed, pop in the Linux CD, and during installation, create partitions and install Linux, you're done. If not, you'd have to resize the existing Ubuntu partition to make space for the new partitions. This guide will help: http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_resizing_ext3_partitions Cheers!
