Newbie always has problems, help please !

Hi guys, I am having several problems I downloaded a few different distros base on the info I've read here. I've tried ubuntu, freespire, slynux, linuxmint and a few others I'm going to. I installed them in my window laptop's VMware workstation (virtual PC), the purpose I'm doing it, just because I'm looking for the one suite me the most, but all distros I've tried have the same problems, when I click full screen within VMware, the desktop itself still small size as was before full screen. The 4 edges are blacks and the desktop is in center, I know that screen revolution cause problem. I adjusted screen size my winxp before install them in vmware, I even adjusted the option within vmware as well, but turn out the problem still exist. I don't know whether those distros haven't developed good "auto detect" for the size of screen or just because I'm nood enough, don't know how to resize the screen after installed. Please help me out another question. is there any site has a list to show which softwares format in which distro can handle (eg; .bin .deb.) due to so many distro. Once, its pissed me off when I downloaded the realplayer.bin from the net to my ubuntu temporary installed, I clicked and clicked and clicked, its just staring at me like nothing going on. how to install softwares in linux please some distros I got no sound after tested a few, is there anywhere I can download audio driver in your opinion, which distro has good looking, easy to use for newbie and last which one has english dictionary sorry for giving guys trouble thanks, have a good day !
