i'm new to linux & want ot put it onto my old laptop. It is a compaq presario 1200 with Microsoft ME what kernel would be suitable for my laptop? Also, there's also a distro called Fluxbuntu that works pretty well on old laptops (I've got it running on a 400 MHz Dell with 128 MB of ram). It gives you access to a very large software package repository through the 'synaptic' package manager and apt tools. I use it for web-browsing, e-mail, chess, and playing the Wesnoth RPG. (Other people have told me that they have Fluxbuntu running on 64 MB machines.) http://fluxbuntu.org/ The only thing though is that it is a 'minimalistic' distro, which means it won't come with a lot of graphic configuration tools by default (you're supposed to install what you want). But there is documentation and an IRC help channel if you're willing to take the time to learn. And it takes quite a while to boot up on old machines.
