Subject: Distro for file sharing on 300Mhz Pc
I have an old PC I would like to use as a file server (mainly just to backup my personal files over the LAN). Would someone recommend a distro? Hardware: 300 Mhz 32-bit PC, 128 MB RAM Software needed: ssh server, NFS server Other requirements/preferences: - installs via CD-ROM, installs its own boot-loader - stable (will boot every time) - some kind of package manager, for getting files off the Internet, would be nice I think (so I could put the Emacs text editor on it easily, and a text-based web browser. Internet will be coming from a DHCP router over Ethernet.) - a well-documented distro would be nice Thank you.

Most distros should have the support you need, but sounds like you want a minimalist version for that hardware. Try: DSL, Debian, maybe Puppy DSL and Puppy are easily installed and set-up, but Debian will have deeper support (lots of doc, forum support). DSL def. meets your req. (suff. documentation), while I'm not so clear on Puppy for NFS server (little client package?) Samba is an option on all.
