Subject: Linux on ASUS EEE PC
I received an ASUS EEE 4G SURF PC while in China. The machine is programed with Chinese, which I don not read. LINUX and OPENOFFICE and FIREFOX as well as everything else are in Chinese. Any help on how to load an English version of the software onto this machine?

It must be Xandros Linux, you can easily grab ISO image and reburn english version. Or better, get something like Ubuntu/Mint/Debian etc.

Andy, this might help http://www.eeeuser.net/?p=8 But yes, your best option could be to simply install a new system. Xandros is the distro. that the eee PC comes with, but I would recommend taking a look at eeeXubuntu.

Thanks for your suggestion. Only problem is I am VERY new to Linux and do not have any idea what an ISO is or what to do with it even if I could find it. Can you fill-in with some specific "HOW TO" regarding this? Thanks, Andy[u]

Andy =) It isnt Linux specific, its CDs)) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image If you have any OS installed, get ISO and burn it, so you can slide the CD, boot and replace install) If no OS,... either your friends or Internet cafe where ppl can burn you the CD,.. or order the CD from Xandros) If youre not stuck to Xandros by some means, ubuntu can send you the cd for free!

Also Andy, you will have to install from an external USB device for the eee PC, such as a n USB CD drive, or USB stick. You didn't have any luck switching languages?

No luck yet. I bought a USB DVD, Targus, and could not get the unit to "see it". Is there some command needed to do this or might the Targus unit not be compatible?? Can I download another distro onto a usb memory and then load it onto this unit? I really like this computer and want to use it when I travel but I'm getting frustrated with the Chinese. Thanks again for the advice.

It looks like you have what you need to get going. Some steps to follow. 01. Power off the ASUS. 02. Make sure you have it plugged in to to the AC adapter. 03. Plug the less than 2 GB USB flash drive. 03. Plug in USB optical device with CD in it. 04. Power up the ASUS. - Keep pressing the escape key you will be pronpted with a boot selection. - You should see your CD/DVD device. Select it with the down arrow then press Enter. - The screen will prompt you again displaying "key in yes to continue". or reboot the system. - Key in the "yes' to continue. - You should see an informational message saying it will take about five minutes to complete. - Just let it do it's thing and it should be OK.
