This is an endless topic with no one easy answer. I just did a Google search with the keyowords "secure linux from hackers" and got thousands of results -- articles, book, and so on. A search right here on Linux.com for "Security" using the Search box in the upper right hand corner of your screen is a good place to start. Lots of articles. Remember, security is a process, not a single thing you do once, and it involves the applications you run more than the operating system itself...

As everyone is saying this is a very broad topic, but I feel one of the 1st things you should do is make sure you have iptables running with the necessary ports open to whatever IP's you want it open to and be very granular. Especially to ssh!!! In the sshd_config file you can tell it what users can login and disallow the root user from logging in through ssh. Again like everyone else says, there are many things you can do... If you would like to contact me further on this topic or any other linux topics please go to http://www.linuxdynasty.org
