Subject: Downloading Programs and running them on Linux Ubuntu
Hey, i just recently installed Linux Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire 5920. It works PERFECTLY...except for one minor thing that has really managed to bug me...a lot. i downloaded some programs off the internet the other night, and extracted them to my desktop. One of them, floola, a standalone app, has managed to work just perfectly. some of the others, like avidemux, blender, or HandBrake for Linux. But i don't know how to run or install them. is there some kind of parallel to the ever popular windows .exe program installer/file? thanks tech.jk

They should be in the Ubuntu repository somewhere, I suggest always installing from whatever repository your distro has if you can. Otherwise, in the files you downloaded should have a README or an INSTALL file with directions on how to do it.

Yup, Khabi is correct. Unless you really need some optimizations or customizations, it's preferable to install from you distributions repositories. For example, in Ubuntu go to a commandline and type sudo apt-get install blender Give your password, and watch the rest happen.
