Subject: program installation Aspire One
I'm a long time windows user and having trouble with my first Linux OS. I have a Aspire One with Linpus Linux Lite v1.0.7.E. I have downloaded the browser FLOCK(-1.2.1.en-US.linux-i6686.tar-gz) i.e. the linux version. I have saved it to the download file and when I try to open/install it I get a window of the application XARCHIVER 0.4.9svn-r. I can't get any further than this. What should I do. Please be gentle in your instructions as I feel lost with Linux. Should the problem be FLOCK itself please still explain how do I install Linux programs downloaded from the internet.

It sounds like what you downloaded is the source code for Flock. I've never used Linpus Lite, but I'm guessing it doesn't come with build and development tools pre-installed. What you want is to try and download Flock through the package management program, which, from what I've seen, is a bit of a hassle as well. The following was taken from here: http://www.laptopmag.com/review/software/linux-street-fight.aspx?pid=4 1. Click My Documents under the Files Tab. 2. Select File > Terminal. A terminal window appears. 3. Enter xfce-setting-show in the terminal command line to access the Xfce Settings Manager. 4. Press Enter. 5. Select the Desktop icon in the Xfce Settings Manager. 6. Click the Behavior tab. 7. Toggle Show desktop menu on right click so the box is checked. 8. Return to the desktop by closing all open windows. 9. Right-click on the desktop to confirm that the desktop menu is enabled. If you followed all prior steps correctly, the Desktop Menu will appear and will contain more options than the limited user interface on the Aspire one. Don't select anything just yet. 10. Open a terminal window by right-clicking on the desktop and select System > Terminal. 11. Type "Sudo -su" at the command prompt and hit Enter. 12. Type "passwd" and hit Enter. 13. Enter a new root password. Your password cannot be a dictionary word; use a combination of letters and numbers. Press Enter. 14. Retype your password. Your new password is set. 15. Right-click on the desktop. 16. Select System > Add/Remove Software. 17. Enter your new root password. The package manager will launch. 18. Install applications as you would in any Linux-based OS. If you have now successfully opened your package manager, search for Flock. Assuming it is in the Linpus repository, you're golden. edit: I think the syntax is wrong on step 11. It should probably be 'sudo su' without the dash. [Modified by: Reed on September 15, 2008 06:53 PM]
