Subject: help with choosing a linux distro
hi, im am new to linux, i heard about it recently and i was wondering if anybody could help me choose a distro. i have an HP pavillon 526x with 730mb RAM, i am currently running on Windows Media Center, but it is really slow and i am hoping to find a linux distro which will allow me to use all the programs i have and not run so slow. well i mostly use my computer for graphic editing and music programs [ex. photoshop, itunes, windows media player] i want a distro that allows me to use these programs, but most importantly, allows me to use fruity loops stuido, and plugins such as nexus, pro52, ravityS, without complications. does anybody have any suggestions?

After looking for what your processor speed might be and getting tired of trying to find it, Xubuntu Alternate install cd, Ubuntu Hardy, Mandriva, or Open Suse Linux are some options to think about.

Damn Small Linux is a 50mb Operating System, and is very fast. It can run from a USB or Live CD, and you don't even have to delete your Windows Operating System! For info on how to do this e-mail me. Gimp is my favorite graphic program, and it's free plus it works on Linux! I'm sorry to say that it's pretty much impossible to run itunes on Linux, since it's only for Windows or Mac users, and programs (such as wine) that'll use itunes don't seem to work very well, but there are other programs that work with Ipods.

Eric, Try downloading a Mandriva 2008 Live cd or a Custom NimbleX Live cd. I have had good luck with running these on 256mb of ram.The Custom NimbleX will run faster. http://custom.nimblex.net/ http://www.mandriva.com/en/download

you need an extra burning program do go on, nero and so don`t work. The only one i do remember is img-burn. After having installed it, you just need to open the iso-file ( of mandriva) and the bootable cd will be burned automatically. Img-burn is for free, just google it, i ain`t got that much time right now, sorry for that.

I'm sorry to tell you that you won't be able to use any of those programs you mention, as Linux is a different Opetating System, and Windows programs are not compatible with Linux. You'll have to use an equivalent program that does the same you want, like these: FL Stduio -> LMMS: http://lmms.sourceforge.net/ Photoshop - > The Gimp: http://www.gimp.org/ iTunes -> Amarok: http://amarok.kde.org/ As for distro choice, I would recommend Ubuntu or Kubuntu, the difference is the default Desktop Enviroment, which is Gnome or KDE respectively.
