Subject: Need help
I'm currently running Windows XP OS, and have downloaded Ubuntu. However, my computer cannot seem to identify the type of program that the OS installer is. I've put the installer on disk, and have tried putting the disk in before boot up, after adjusting my BIOs so the CD-Rom would be first. It just goes straight to my hard disk and loads XP. I'm currently using a Hewlett-Packard with a Pentium 4 processor. Any help?

You need to burn the ISO image to the CD and not just burn a data cd like you normally do. Any CD burning software will give you the option to select if you "want to burn an image". Look for that option and then select the Ubuntu ISO file and then burn the CD.

Yes, but it's not on the computer in the first place in order to burn the image. As if it didn't download the image at all.

That can't be! What did you put on the CD then? Did you perhaps download a torrent? Is it a .torrent file? Where did you download Ubuntu from? [Modified by: Shashank Sharma on October 20, 2007 03:51 PM]

I downloaded it from Linux.com. After I had downloaded it, I double clicked the file, and it said 'Windows cannot identify this type of file'

You download Ubuntu from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download Select what you want and click download. Did you do this? Once downloaded burn it to a disk like I described above. It should be a .ISO file.

It's hard to help as we will need to back and forth more quickly. So here are some general tips, sorry if I insult your intelligence. You need to burn an iso to a CD. Do not copy an iso file onto a data CD. This windows software is the best IMO for doing this: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm Install the software I suggested or another ISO burning software/ Download a linux distro from an official site, make sure the file size is correct (gigs) Right click iso file, burn to CD (not DVD) For many distros (such as ubuntu) pop CD in and reboot. Enter BIOS make sure CD is is booting before hard disk You might have a fast boot BIOS that has memorized the settings, popping out the battery for a few minutes, or unplugging the hard drive would be a more drastic measure you could take to force CD to boot. I'm off of redmond for good. I'm glad I did!

If you don't know what WTC7 means find out as quickly as possible. After that look into the forensic evidence. The proof is out there.

ISO Recorder is a tool (power toy) for Windows XP, 2003 and now Windows Vista, that allows (depending on the Windows version) to burn CD and DVD images (DVD support is only available on Windows Vista), copy disks, make images of the existing data CDs and DVDs and create ISO images from a content of a disk folder. ISO Recorder has been conceived during Windows XP beta program, when Microsoft for the first time started distributing new OS builds as ISO images. Even though the new OS had CD-burning support (by Roxio), it did not have an ability to record an image. ISO Recorder has filled this need and has been one of the popular Windows downloads ever since. With an advent of Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 the version 2 of ISO Recorder has been released, which introduced some new features including ISO image creation and support for non-admin user. Finally, in Windows Vista it became possible to address another long-standing request and provide DVD burning capability. Since the very beginning ISO Recorder has been a free tool (for personal use). It is recommended by MSDN download site along with Easy CD and Nero and is used by a number of companies around the world. [Modified by: Prefabrik on March 19, 2008 08:28 PM]
