hi ya guys don't know if im posting in the right place cuz im new to linux.com but i have just recently purchased the acer netbook aspire one which comes with the operating system linux linpus lite. im new to linux and i am having difficulty first off i want to install software like limewire but when i download the version for linux it opens up in XARCHIVER and it just got a load of weird file names. when i extract it its just got pictures of razorblades ( or something similar) and none of the files can be accesed i use Windows normally and this is my first computer with a linux opperating system. secondly i want to be able to run .exe files but they are specially designed for windows i did some google searches and it told me to use the application wine. but i dont know where to get it from or if it will work on linux linpus lite and also my acer netbook as a 8GB hard drive and 512mb of RAM and no cd drive so i dont know if it will cope. any ideas will be much appreciated besides get new laptop or other criticizing comments.

Now, I'm not real familiar with Acer notebooks (I run a hand-me-down 400Mhz laptop someone gave me), but I think they run off of the Linpus Linux distribution. And I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that Linpus is similar to Fedora, which uses an RPM package management system. So I think you need a package in RPM format: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/sourceforge/o/op/openwire/LimeWire-free-4.9.0-0.i386.html. See "http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/rpminstall.html" for how to install RPM files. If you downloaded your Limewire files from "http://www.limewire.com/download/version.php" you might have been trying to install a debian format package (.deb) which is the package management system used by Debian and Ubuntu. It is probably possibly to do that in Linpus, but you'd have to install the Apt package management tools first (if they are available to Linpus). Or you'd have to install Debian or something on you Acer. (Which actually might be a good idea -- although I'd recommending waiting until you are a little more familiar with Linux.)

I would recommend trying FrostWire (http://www.frostwire.com/), it connects to all the same stuff as Lime Wire, and you can download an RPM version or a tarball. If the above poster is correct, you want to download the RPM, and it should install fairly easily. As a general rule for Linux, it is always better to run a free replacement that is designed for Linux instead of trying to run Windows applications in Wine. Wine tends to be a last resort. If you list some of the applications you want to install, the members here can probably suggest a suitable replacement for you.
