MESSIER* Joined: Oct 14, 2008 Posts: 3 Other Topics	Posted Oct 14, 2008 at 3:29:55 PM Subject: job control turned off? hey everyone, i just installed the newest part of linux ubuntu (i think its 8.4 or something) and when i try to boot it up it goes through a little bit then it goes to a black screen and says "job control turned off" and it doesnt go any further. on the black screen you can type commandes and if you type help (i think its help) it gives you a list of commandes but i dont know what to do there so... im guessing i have to turn job controll on to fix my computer so if anyone could help me fix this problm it would be greatly appreciated. thanks Ty

I tried to hunt down an answer for you, but it seems that there are a dozen different solutions, and no fix-all solution is available. MESSIER* Joined Oct 14, 2008 Posts: 3 Other Topics	Posted: Oct 15, 2008 5:31:39 AM Subject: job control turned off? ok , now i need to know how you tell where the grub is pointing? i pressed esc and it brought me to a screen were i had 3 choices to pick from (unfortunitly i dont remember them) am i in the right place? i pressed "e" to edit and it dident have anything i could edit that even remotely resembled "root=/dev/hda1" i need help! and its 8.04 ubuntu not 8.4

Ok, so after you press Esc to enter the GRUB menu, there should be a list of different versions of the kernel; they look like "Ubuntu 8.04 kernel123121213 (generic)". Highlight the top entry and press 'e'. The second line looks roughly like "kernel something-/boot/whatever123 root=UUID=3ffaef-a23betc... quiet splash". (I can't remember that well.) Press 'e' to edit this line. Change the "root=UUID=3ffaef-a23betc..." to "root=/dev/hda1". You can then press Esc to go back to the first menu, and just press enter on the top entry to boot.
