Subject: using external hard drive to transfer docs to linux
Hi, I am new to linux and want to transfer my docs from a windows xp laptop on my external hard drive and copy the contents to my new linux laptop but when i plug it in i get the error message [u]'failed to mount external HD' 'unkown file system 'ntfs'[/u] Any help how to overcome this would be greatly appreciated!!!

ntfs is a Window thing. Have you got an app loaded that can read ntfs e.g. ntfs-3g It would simplify life if you formatted the external hard drive with something like fat, fat16 or even fat32. Both Windows and Linux can use them.

Lee, If you can network the two systems, try using samba.. man/google it. Or load vmplayer then windows on your linux laptop. Good Luck. Beann

Most modern distributions have built-in support for ntfs.
