I think Mandriva One would be a good choice for you. It comes with a lot of things preinstalled that help you work/play better. Linux (including Mandriva) should have most everything you just described: openoffice as an alternative to Word, Gaim or Pidgin for instant messaging, Firefox for web browsing. Limewire is also available for Linux. I'm not sure about the mp3 player -- I've never used that device. Do google searches to find out if it works under Linux. Video games: There are lots of free and open source video games available for Linux. For example, see http://whdb.com/2008/top-25-linux-games-for-2008/. However, if you want to play Windows game under Linux, you have to install a program called Wine. Many windows games work running under Wine, but not all. For a list of some that do, check out http://appdb.winehq.com/. Welcome to the Linux community. As you make the switch, though, please remember that Linux is a different operating system that Windows. Not everything works exactly the same as it does in Windows, and generally you will need to use software and hardware that is compatible with Linux.
