Subject: Help! No sound on HiNote VP 700 series laptop running DSL
I installed Damn Small Linux on a Digital HiNote VP 700 series laptop. It has a 166MHz Pentium MMX processor and 95MB of ram. The built in sound card is good, as it worked fine under Windows 2000 (which worked but was really slow).
I have researched this issue and have downloaded all the ALSA related stuff. I have no idea how to implement the drivers though. I have double clicked all the files to see if they would self install. Still, no sound.
I can pull up the mixer and it seems the volume controls are turned down all the way. I try to click on them and drag them up but they don't move. I use the built-in mp3/cd player program (XMS I think) but when I open it I get the message that no output has been configured for audio and it won't obviously play.
Why couldn't DSL just make a configuration utility like they did for the ndiswrapper and prism2 functions for internet? I have no clue how to go on from here.

Any ideas at all regarding sound drivers? I might be able to get the original drivers for the laptop. Anyway to wrap these for linux?

I am not running DSL anymore Greg. I switched over to NimbleX After bumping my ram up to 128mb. Good Luck Dude.
On another note Ndiswrapper is what is used to wrap Windows drivers to work in Linux. The next link shows how to run command line in terminal to use Ndiswrapper to install a Wireless driver. Just substitute your sound driver name for the wireless driver name and it should get you there.
