Subject: Probable virus-need advice
I have a dual boot XP & Kubuntu machine. I bought a licence some years ago for a proprietry software package for which there is no alternative for the Linux platform. ( Autodesk Architectural Desktop ) so I still sometimes need windows. My problem is this: I can boot into Kubuntu no problem. Windows is knackered. I recently booted windows to download & install some printer drivers and I think I may have picked up a virus along the way. At around the same time I downloaded and installed the latest release of KDE ( KDE 4.whatever ) It couldn't be that could it? Can I reinstall windows without screwing up my Kubuntu installation? I have only ever done it the other way round ie windows first & then the other OS. It seems on my machine that Linux has taken control of the boot process. I could reinstall both systems but I would rather avoid the hassle if possible. Does linux allow for the installation of another OS as dual boot? Would really appreciate some help here.
Can I reinstall windows without screwing up my Kubuntu installation?
You can but you will wipe out the grub bootloader. Just make sure you reinstall Windows back onto the partition you had it on originally. Here is the Ubuntu documentation on reinstalling Grub bootloader after you are finished reinstalling Windows.https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows.
