Subject: Installing Ubuntu on an old copmputer
I've been trying for the last hour to install ubuntu onto an old e tower i800, I'd say its about 8-9 years old. after burning the disk from my current computer, i tried to install it on the old one to find that it refused to work. It will run and bring up the install menu, but after about 5 minutes on a screen with just a flashing underscore, a bunch of errors appear. After some digging, i found that xubuntu is better for older computers, so i burnt the disk and tried that one only to get the same problem. The computer runs on windows 98, and has 64mb SyncD RAM and 256 Max (I'm not entirely sure what that means, but i know that i need 124 mb to run Ubuntu, but I'm not sure which to go by). Can anyone tell me what is wrong and how i can fix it if possible?

It's quite possible that your hardware (RAM) is simply not up to running Ubuntu. Xubuntu just needs less resources to run its GUI, but is still probably too much for your machine. Maybe give Damn Small Linux a try?
