Subject: The Case for a New Open Source License
http://www.cilk.com/multicore-blog/bid/7191/The-Case-for-a-New-Open-Source-License A proposal for a new open source license that attempts to balance the give-and-take across all stakeholders: It lowers the burden for those who contribute to open source; It results in stronger software and support; It allows firms to extend their commercial offering to the open source community. Correct me if I'm wrong here. This is the basic idea behind the CAPL: It's supposed to be like the GPL, but with this additional stipulation: even if a business does not "distribute" a derivative of an open-source product, but keeps it "private" for internal use only, the business is still required to release their source code? (Or buy a commercial license, in the case of a dual license situation.) So then the practical issue is whether or not "internal" distribution should be considered legal distribution. Am I understanding it correctly? If that is the only significant difference, then I probably wouldn't switch licenses just for that. Though it is probably an issue that should be considered in the next revision of the GPL.
