Yikes, just stumbled onto this thread and holy crap did it take an ugly turn quickly.
GregDearth - I'm sorry you couldn't get Linux to run on your machines, but the fact is that you failed to get it running and that is not the fault of the OS. You're used to Windows, you know where everything is, if you were as familiar with Linux you'd not have had those issues. So you need either the know-how or the drive to learn something new, if you have neither please stick with windows and stay the hell out of the linux forums we have enough troll bait fanboys.

Can certainly get hot in Linuxland! I'm pretty new to linux - found it about 8 months and dozens of trashed installs ago. I got terminally peeved with MS XP when I added a couple of new dvd roms and XP insisted I re-validated. Wanted more autonomy, found linux. Main problem is a bit like trying to park in an empty carpark - too much choice! But that's the fun of it.
I'm no geek, nor any sort of expert, but I've now got a home network with 2 pcs and 3 printers (waiting for the 3rd pc to be delivered). Damned addictive!
Running a pcworld (UK) e-machine on Ubuntu 8.04 (8.10 won't play properly), an old Advent on Mint 5, an HP all-in-one, HP D1560 and Lexmark X1260 all-in-one. Had some fun earlier, but it just works. Had worse problems with windows 95 and XP.
Best thing is the choice of desktops. Tried KDE 3.5 (so-so), KDE 4 (not for me) XFCE (no thanks) love Gnome. All seem to me a damn sight better than Windows, and the add-ons are free!
Point is, the choice is there. It's up to you to take it or leave it, that's what 'free choice' means. No need for linuxites to get too defensive - be a worse world if we all had to be just the same.
While I'm here, only real problem I've got is finding a 'drop-in' for PowerPoint. Open Office doesn't quite make it. Any ideas out there?

Why linux is free. Because Linus Torvalds put linux kernel under free license. Same as GNU did for there software. So did many others. Most Distro are free but there are a few that charge.
