experimentation is the spice of life - you can always go back right :)

debian would probably work, its still fairly easy, but is a bit more involved. </div>

Hmmm, if you are going to look at Debian -- which you should -- put Sidux on your list. It is built on the &quot;testing&quot; version of Debian, but it has seemed quite stable when I have played with it. It does keep you in the Debian family, which is a good thing. Debian distros use the best package management system out there, I think. </div>
ok so ive been using ubuntu and fedora for a while now, moved from fedora to ubuntu. and i like them both but i want something more involved and yet easy to install. and i also dont like the fact that i cant seem to get into te SU account in the term in ubuntu. any sugestions for a distro? or should i just stick with what i have since it works and i know how to use it?

If you need root access in Ubuntu just issue the command &quot;sudo bash&quot; this will take and leave you at an always elevated command prompt. If however you really would like enable root in Ubuntu you can do the following from terminal:

1. sudo passwd root
2. When you see the prompt that says “Enter new UNIX password”, enter the password you want for the root user and confirm it.
3. Type: sudo gedit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
4. Locate the line that says “AllowRoot=false”. Change it to “AllowRoot=true”.
5. Save the file
6. Exit gedit, logout and then reboot.

You now have root access, however I would suggest leaving at is and using sudo bash instead. Also I would recomend Open SuSE 11.1 but you will be unhappy because they too have adopted the disabled root and sudo command in this latest release. If you really want to get hard core may I suggest Gentoo or Slackware...

Try Arch Linux. I don't believe they have an official install cd with a gui interface but the text install is straight forward. Gives you complete control over your computer. Some of the community members say it is a mix of Slackware and Gentoo. I distro hopped for a long time but I always got upset at the extra packages installed by default that I didn't want. Arch takes care of that. Plus if you look to the kdemod community they have a package manager called Shaman that works well if you don't want to use the command line. </div>
ok so ive been using ubuntu and fedora for a while now, moved from fedora to ubuntu. and i like them both but i want something more involved and yet easy to install. and i also dont like the fact that i cant seem to get into te SU account in the term in ubuntu. any sugestions for a distro? or should i just stick with what i have since it works and i know how to use it?
As for getting into the root account from a term on Ubuntu, there is a work-around their root account lock - just execute the command &quot;sudo su - root&quot; from a terminal command line, and Voila! There you are! Anyway, it works for me. I was bitching about this as well, until I thought to myself &quot; If I can sudo any command, why NOT su as well?&quot;.<p class="hiddensignature">

I keep looking, but so far the best options I have found are CentOS for high-end workstations and servers such as my 8-core graphics workstation, and Ubuntu for my dual-core laptop (good wireless/mobile options). Some folks like Suse better than RHEL (which is CentOS for $$, or more properly CentOS is a free version of RHEL) and vice versa. Generally I've had better luck with CentOS and Ubuntu than anything else. I'm still looking at other distributions, and if I find something I REALLY like, I'll write it up here.<p class="hiddensignature">

I also may be looking for a new distro. Up til now, I have used only
Red Hat distros (6-9) and currently Fedora core 5. Does anyone have
experience/opinions about fedora vs other distros, pro and con?
I also prefer the KDE gui.
I started with Unix about 1978 at UofW and then used HPUX and
IBM AIX at Boeing.
I was intereested in Rubbermans comments that CentOS&lt;&gt;RHEL.
Any comments will be appreciated. </div>

</div>

Try some of the non base varients of Debian like Mint.
Its a good distro based on Ubuntu. It also had the fortune telling feature!
Right now I use Mandriva... a great Desktop for both KDE as well as GNOME!
