Subject: WindowsXP and linux dual boot
I had a question regarding dual boot with windowsXP and centOS 4.7, right now I only have windowsXP and I was thinking about formatting my disc and installing WindowsXP and CentOS after that (I was told it's best to install Windows first). I'd like to be able to choose which OS will boot every time I turn on my PC.
This was the advice I received:
"In Windows, leave the unallocated disk space as "unallocated". This is going to be the "free space" to which you are going to install CentOS.
Start CentOS install by booting from the CD media. Follow the instructions. When it comes to the disk partitioning step, select the "Use free space on.." option. You can see what the selection page looks like in the Installation guide:
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Installation_Guide/s1-diskpartauto-x86.html
At a later step, you will be asked where you want the bootloader to be installed. Choose the "MBR". You will also have a chance to add your Windows as a boot option. You will be choosing either CentOS or Windows as the default OS."
I can't find anything in the documentation, I know it has to do with GRUB but even if I manage to add Windows as a boot option (how?) I don't know how do I configure it so that I can choose at startup which OS boots.
Thanks

I'm sorry, but are you trying to decide whether or not to follow the Centos advice? I don't see any reason why not to. Should work fine as long as you make sure to leave enough free space on the drive when you install Windows.
As far as configuring Grub, it sounds to me like Centos will handle that for you. (I don't use Centos myself.) But if you want to configure Grub yourself after you've installed Windows and Linux, then you'll need to learn what text to put into your /boot/grub/menu.list file. Maybe something here will help you: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/how-do-i-add-windows-xp-to-grub-boot-loader-375198/

I didn't know Grub automatically set it so that I can choose which system boots up every time.
I've already installed Windows in a partition leaving 50Gb for Linux but now when I restart with the first CentOS CD in the drive it doesn't ask me if I want to boot from the CD (as it did when I installed windows)
