Subject: Nvidia Display Driver problems
Hey guys and gals and bots alike! I'll be honest upfront, I know jack about programming and code and Linux, but somehow I manage. Anyway, my problem is thus: I recently installed Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and I'm very pleased with it for the most part. Unfortunately, I can't get the recommended Nvidia graphics card update to work (the 177 release) My card is the GeForce 8600 GT 512 MB. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is no pain where strength lies.

Just to make sure... You have installed the NVidia drivers, right? http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

If you have kernel 2.6.27.7 it seems there are a few issues with some nVidia drivers. I have an older nVidia card in a machine here and had to go digging for the latest 96.xx.xx driver to get it working. Google your issue- somebody will have figured out the exact driver you need.

To properly install the nVidia drivers that you download from the nVidia web site, you have to boot into run level 3 (no GUI) and install the driver from the command line. I have had good success with the 177.xx drivers (currently at 177.80, but will install 177.82 soon) running on CentOS 5.2 in 64bit mode. I run two 24" digital 1920x1200 displays on my 8800GT card and have zero problems. I can even run Windows in VirtualBox VM on one screen in full resolution (1920x1200x32bit) with full-motion video. One caveat is that the nVidia drivers don't support xen-enabled kernels.

Sometimes real fast is almost as good as real time. Remember, Google is your friend!
