Subject: ROOT problem
Good morning, First of all I wish all of you your dreams will come true in 2009. And to begin with good resolution I shift from Windows to Linux with a nice MOB II laptop under Linpus Lite RC2.5FN working with Intel Atom CPU N270. As soon I switched on the power all LINUX programs showed up at a glance without requesting any password exception of the serial number. Everything worked fine until I wanted to update the signatures of the Clam Tk Virus Scanner for it request to be "ROOT" to be able to proceed. And I have no idea how to proceed with LINUX to access the Administration rights and provide the adequate password. So any help will be warmly appreciated !!! Thanks in advance for your cooperation. Beaudevant

Find the terminal application. This is like the old Windows "cmd" that gives a text command console to enter commands except this will be in a half gui format. You should see a "$" sign. Immediately after this type "sudo su" without the quote marks. This will return a message and finally a "#". This means you are now in as "root" user. Root is the "Administartor equivalent in Microsoft. Now type "passwd". It will ask you for your new password. Type in whatever you want the new password to be,.and enter. You will not see any keystrokes. This is so that peeking eyes will not see your root password. You will be asked to re-enter the password. if you make a mistake it will tell you so else it will accept the password. DO NOT FORGET THIS PASSWORD ELSE YOU ARE DEAD IN THE WATER., It is the only way you will be able to access your system to make changes. Any command I ask you to type in this post should not have the quote marks included in the command. Won;t hurt nothing, it will just tell you invalid command if you put in the Quote marks to. Hope that is clear enough. I don't run Linpus but there should be a menu or panel that will show Terminal. Thats what you need to open to follow my instructions.
